What is involved in the ESOL program, and why does my child take the ACCESS test?

hello Jasper County we are back with an update from our esol program regarding her upcoming access testing for yellow house so my name is Don Sayer I am the district multilingual gifted and talented coordinator Opti will bring you first as regarding the esol program which is nothing new the first detail we have is how do we identify our ml students so our students used to be identified as English language learners has now identified our students as multilingual Learners as we know we have many languages coming into our districts across the state and across the United States so the first step that our families come in doing is filling out a home language survey and business survey that filled out by our parents and Guardians to identify what are students primarily speak whether it is language they speak at home it is whether they communicates with her friends and family if it is a language other than English is identified so once that identify Darcy go to what we call a screening process and through the screening process there is a level that comes with that screening which I I will identify later so these students are place what we call service model it could be anywhere from a class. Model Center pull out model I'll co-teaching model consultative dual immersion or shelter content models once students successfully go through these models are considered monitor students receive linguistic support in four. games of reading listening writing and speaking so what are these levels mean once they're screened students will level in considering a level 1 of entering all the way up to level 6 reaching even though they don't have to get all the how to level 6 reaching these the level that they can be identified through screening or taking access for Ells the different types of service models depend on these levels at their screens through so students and levels 1 through 3 and our secondary high school and middle school will receive a class. And this is where they will attend a class during one of their class block. Other classes are pushing or pull out models the Porsche model is exactly what it sounds like the ml or esol teacher will literally push into that classroom for the mo students will receive their linguistic I'm service models alongside the general education teacher a powwow is the opposite where the mot troll pull the student out there with small group differentiation Linguistics service models Co teaching is where the mo esol teacher Works directly alongside the Jenna teacher and they will lesson plan and co-teacher small group differentiation service models together Delta concept model is one of the newest models that we provide here Jasper County School District last year we had 13 teachers received their esol certification through usc-aiken those teachers are now at the point where they can provide those Sol linguistic service models directly inside their gen Ed classroom so typically what you're looking for is a student who's coming and receiving service models is no receivable Services anywhere from four to five years eating these services our goal is for them to level out receive their linguistic acquisition along those for 25 years and then they will become what we call monitored so for another 4 years we will still monitor along say that general education teacher to make sure there's not a linguistic acquisition barrier preventing our star students from becoming endemic wrote for them so in order to pass this access pass that we have coming up which I will details about is a student needs to receive a 4.4 overall composite score so it's before I talked about levels of 1 through 60 students of not have to receive a 6 in order to access the program so that over all combined the score 4.4 but in those four domains of listening Reading Writing and speaking they also need to receive a 4.0 and all of those so 4.4 and then a 4.0 in all four domains will exit us to out of receiving service models in the program that will then push them into what we call the monitoring stage of a service model and they will receive a monitoring service for 4 years along send the general education teacher to make sure there's not a linguistic barrier for students they had academic success so the question comes with my student have to receive esol or be part of the actual program and that answer is no parents can weigh their child to not receive Services however if a child is strained inside those levels of one through six and has not passed the state access test they do have to be tested annually until I pass out of that test the 4.4 and 4.0 and 4 domains to become monitor so this brings us to our testing season of access for Ells 2024 so our testing window begins Monday January 22nd and will close on March 8th for Access for Ells we do not have a makeup Windows it is one window of January 22nd through March 8th at this time we will pull our students were identified as multilingual and have not passed access yet they will be tested in the for language domains that have been identified before as listening Reading Writing and speaking students will be tested and grouped first and listening and reading we group our students in 15 students or less to keep our students focused on those areas so in listening and reading happens first is our students test in listening and reading and then the system tears are students so that they are regrouped again for writing and speaking are writing is also a small group of 15 or less but are speaking is smaller so that our students can focus on articulation and giving descriptions as much as they can and groups of five or less so I want to thank you for this time this up very important cast for multilingual students to take and to focus on taking we have shared links with our esol program team and we have shared links with our Jenna team regarding what is the test look like can I take practice sample items what can I take a test demo all of those links have been shared and are also shared on our websites of as well if you as parents or community members want to take a look at what this test looks like I want to thank you for joining us today if you ever have any questions for me please do not hesitate to send me an email as it is located in that second fox or you can shoot me a phone call right there and my extension is 1406 thank you again for your time
