Dual Language Immersion Hello to parents, students, and community members of Jasper County School District. It is finally here, the new initiative of Dual-Immersion Program. Whether you attend Ridgeland Campus or Hardeeville Campus for Kindergarten, you can take advantage of this program. Your child will be fully immersed in a 50/50 native English-speaking ELA classroom for half the day and native Spanish speaking math, science, social studies for the other half of the day. Currently, this program is only available to Kindergarteners during SY 2021-2022. Each year after, the program will expand by one grade level. (First grade begins - SY 2022-2023, Second Grade begins - SY 2023-2024, etc...)

hello Jasper families parents students and community members of Jasper County School District we are coming to you today about our new initiative that's coming this fall and that is the immersion program and this is starting fall in 2021-22 school year so who is involved in this immersion program so this this immersion program is going to be targeted this school year I'm starting with are kindergarteners so our upcoming kindergarteners in 2120 and this program will involve our native English-speaking students together cohesively and collaboratively with our need a Spanish-speaking students so they will be together immersed in the classroom and this immersion program so what is a dual immersion what is an immersion program and how old this work with our upcoming kindergarteners this fall so what happens is for first half of their day with these students will be fully immersed with a native speaking English language arts teacher for first half of the day and that will include i-Ready reading lb on that program with a writing and reading workshop and that will include related arts as well for first half of their day II half of the day will be that bilingual peace and they'll shift over to that bilingual native Spanish speaking teacher and they'll be fully immersed in Spanish-speaking math science and social studies classroom now this is a immersion of the secondary language of by no means does this push aside their primary language this is a cohesive immersion of both the primary and secondary language to build vocabulary skills for are kindergarteners please note to our parents and community members that are learning resources will be available to you at home and your primary language at home so if your primary language is Spanish at home you will have those available resources to guide hope you're sitting at home in Spanish if your native language of home is English you will have those resources available to at home to guide and help your student and English as well so where will this be located so will this location will be how is primarily at the Hardeeville elementary school so if you have an upcoming kindergartener that attends Ridgeland and you want your child to be in the subversion program your child can be signed up or you can sign your child up for this immersion program and that link will be provided to you on our website and I'll show you how to get there at the end of this presentation so this program is immersion dual immersion program will be held at the heart of the elementary this is a district-wide program so anybody the district will be able to sign up as a school of choice for upcoming kindergarteners however you must remain in the immersion program if you are the owner for Ridgeland elementary school if you stay in this program you will be able to stay at Hardeeville campus into first grade second grade third grade and so on and so forth this is a sign up as first come first serve this is a cap in our kindergarten classroom has 24 students so please note that we are are opening up the link today and today is May 4th at 6 p.m. that link will open and it is an interest survey so if you are interested or you have questions or you would like more information please know that you can send emails and you can solve the interest survey what is this look like what is an immersion program look like this is an example schedule it is not set in stone as is we going to fall things will change and alter but this is basically what it would look like for the first half of a class so this is is a 50-50 model immersion schedule and this is what it would look like so if my child was in the first half with the native English-speaking teacher in the ELA classroom they would be focusing on ready reading I ready program will be working on reading and writing Workshop guided reading and related arts if my child started off of the bilingual teacher and native speaking Spanish then we be focusing on our program of Imagine language and literacy in Spanish working on math math concepts we be working on i-Ready math we be working on science Concepts social studies concepts related arts now please note at the bottom once 11:25 once at lunch time hits they will eat lunch and go to Reese's together just like everybody else does in kindergarten Elementary and then the students switch so if there's a class of 24 the first 12 goes with the native English-speaking teacher and the second 12 goes with the Bible will need a Spanish they can teach her after lunch and recess they switch over so if I had English in the beginning of my day I now have Spanish and the second half of my day what are my options I enroll my child in the kindergarten program immersion program and we want to transition out you do have the option and will lead to transition back to the traditional classroom this is offered next year at the kindergarten level it will be offered the next years until first and second and so on and so forth research does states that after first grade it is not recommended to enroll a student into the immersion program in the reason behind that is the building a vocabulary vocabulary skills what students are enter into 2nd and 3rd grade the vocabulary skills that are learned in the secondary language whether you are native English or native Spanish vocabulary skills I learned is a kindergartener and a first grader are naturally moved and a second and third grader and it gets progressively more difficult so please note that the cutoff is first grade so if you would like your child to be part of this program as a kindergartener now is the time to sign up and take advantage of a program like this for student academic and college career readiness so why is this important where are there opportunities in war are in college readiness and this is what it would look like so if your child is sending up in kindergarten am I going to see immediate results am I going to hear of a bilingual child speaking more than likely not are you going to share some words and more practice but it will take some time to see some results so the career opportunities that you see here is my fourth or fifth grades both native English speakers and need a Spanish speakers will begin showing the signs and the data of success of the bilingualism that is when you'll start seeing that our students will begin to shift to the higher vocabulary skills in middle school with the immersion program there is a shift where are they were learning math in Spanish they we'll have a shift over to the English there's a higher level of vocabulary skills and math once they shipped over the middle school and that class will be taught in the need of english-language the bilingual is in peace students will Star Tours or even surpass our all English beers and all content areas making them more advantageous for job opportunities and then shifts is over to the college opportunities and students progress of the program it's in middle school and even at the high school more opportunities will open by staying in the immersion program and then into high school students will eventually have the opportunity to merge with a dual enrollment program that we offer at the high school level are native English-speaking students will have the Opera ready to either take advanced placement or AP Spanish or enroll in Spanish 101 102 and that's what are Partnerships that we have with TCL and UCF UCSB the native Spanish-speaking students also have the same opportunities where they can take advanced placement English or enroll in English composition 101 102 the bilingual students will be presented with more college and university opportunities and they're all English years here is an opportunity to see how this works in an actual classroom Amigos is a two-way Immersion School for students from J K through 8th grade the mission and vision of our school is to graduate young people who are fully by biliterate and Multicultural human being not to that you know how to go to train station or restaurant in order food it means that students feel confident Reading Writing communicating expressing themselves in both languages Northgate Xscape both languages have equal footing an equal power so you're not learning Spanish as a foreign language learning Spanish as the language of instruction as English is the language of instruction we're studying about plans we have a model that is 80% Spanish in the early grades cheetahs is 20% of instructional time in English and as they go throughout the years that model shifts to 50% instructions in Spanish and 50% in English Spanish around you so that makes you motivated there's a lot of research around to immersion and the benefits of speaking multiple languages in my mind the benefits are cognitive social and economic there's all kinds of different benefits that have been researched about the vocabulary that you built in two languages as opposed to just one how flexible and malleable your brain is to me is more about humanity and how we are able to step in somebody else's shoes and see the world how they see it I like learning to languages because if I go somewhere that has another language they might soda understand you a little bit in the beginning that we have different kind of people that they speak different languages so it's not only you your country or language I learned Spanish as a teenager so I wasn't it child and it wasn't part of my family and I always tell people the World opened up to me and not even in a way of life I could get so many jobs but just I know more about the world's and I am able to talk to more people and go more places and understand things that were The Impossible if I didn't speak Spanish for most of our teachers being bilingual has impacted their personal life in a significant way when they really bring that with them here and help Inspire the young people over the years I've gone through doubts of oh well I don't know that much Spanish so maybe I'm not exactly bilingual but now as I've gotten older I've embraced my culture and who I am I'm like I'm bilingual because I speak Spanish and I speak English and I am open to any culture to hear the students recognize the benefits tells me that we're doing the right thing we want them to feel that they can leave Amigos and go out into the world meet new people and visit new places and have a world perspective about life to think is really crucial in this day and age for our young people okay we hope we leave that with you I'm a better sense of what an immersion program looks like and what we hope to bring here to Jasper County School District with a program that's
