good morning morning on March 18th right phone on his way right discussion I don't see United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands 1 nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all and for the over you caught me at a expectation process for us this morning can I use my teacher Voice or do you need the microphone all right okay great great uh so I think some of you maybe all of you know that I'm on high alert for our second grandbaby um yes she is due Thursday but she can decide when she's coming that according to the doctor if he at any time and I'm about 3 and a half hours from them right now so but it's a pleasure to be with you I did have a backup plan several call back your plans for today and today she came early but it is my pleasure to be with you thank you for coming out on a Saturday morning uh your volunteering and your uh Community uh appreciate all the support that you provide not only here but I'm certainly in other places and and other ways um I did just get a texture of the moment of silence so if I could just check that to make sure I'm not leaving I said but let me just see okay so if life is not complicated enough I'm just going to share um my nephew is in uh Oklahoma currently 1 sister her husband and my mother 283 and as healthy as me probably are on their way to with my car last night they were alerted that the wildfires had broken out in Oklahoma near my nephew's apartment and they told him them to be ready to get out if they came by knocking on their thankfully they did not have to do that however my mother sister and um brother-in-law are in Mississippi driving through most likely today some of that line of uh bad weather so and I was lights going on but they're good that's who that was from so I'm I'm spread um then this morning but you have me for as long as you take me this 1 and I promise to be devoted to you but I will see if I get a message check so uh also I want to talk about uh the names on the screen here uh Terry Johnson is out of Georgia she lives about 45 minutes from here a wonderful colleague of mine who's done this work with Georgia school boards and she had agreed to be my backup for today and even texted me this morning so that's why you see Terry's name on the um many of you have heard of or heard from Dr Harrison he's currently serving on an international review uh the next time we come together uh Dr Harrison plans to be with you and my direct the boss and brand is Gary Cooper and he was also planning to be here but also have a conflict lots happening but I just wanted you to know who those folks are and who's supporting me and you so I want to take this few minutes and let's just go around the the room uh starting over here and my eyesight is terrible so I have to get up closer so I can see Miss Stacy will you tell us who you are and just a little bit about she said let's just take about you know 30 45 seconds cuz I think it's important to know who we are um um I'm a retired educator and administrator that's what kind of and I married to him minister and had 7 grandsons and 1 grand riding um I've been bolded raised in death County but I love children and my name is I moved over here 25 years ago um I represent District 8 on the school board and I'm impressed I didn't CEO I'm going to go to the house and I am a black woman born guest happening um I have to reach children uh to undergo um I have definitely children great great uh uh I am a representative uh for and I am a contributor all these things that is perfectly fine my name is across the Great ponds have been here for hours that's scary right but this is not my home I have 2 dogs and my house it'll be going I've always I'm Tom Bell here yanking on the board moved here about 13 years ago uh 40 years of education as a teacher administrator of Wisconsin but unfortunately the grand on what we talked about so I got tickets and 3 brands from the set of 9 year olds or responses and the the 16 year old has been spent thank our friends over here with you so what um did by 27 years uh have an educator are born we are here in South Carolina manage how can I specifically uh talk uh for 5 years primarily second grade uh field and sixth grade uh I've been a assistant principal principal for over 12 and a half years district from about 8 uh and in this capacity for the last 8 months from Charleston South Carolina I'm not an educator but my wife is so I get it at work and I get it when I get home Council Jasper County and I'm a little disappointed in the browser and she just stood up and said she didn't have any children she has lots of people that call her mom she's a mom so a lot of people giving birth doesn't make you a mother that's true 1 Connie Jackson like Parks a lot of about 30 years 24 Fields have been with the firm I don't have any children I'm not in the area but I do love children I love all the children and I am invested in making sure that they get years and I want to know what your Tech well I'm Sean Shelton I'm currently the director of Technology um I'm really from Baltimore but grew up mostly in the South Carolina area Jasper I came originally I believe it was 20 uh 12 or 2013 and I actually started as a um Early Childhood teacher in the Resident Elementary School um went away for a little while came back in the Tech coach before moving into my current it um been here I think Jasper this makes your tin for me if I'm not mistaken I'm Travis Washington I'm the public information officer for the school district and I've been here in this capacity for about 6 years from Hampton County early Branch why area um I have 4 Kids I have a high schooler a middle schooler Elementary Schooler and a daycare follows me around so Lots going on in my life uh love being busy and um happy to serve the kids with Jasper Kelly I just think it's so important to um find out about each other you know those things to do sometimes here uh conversation but it's really good just to level set and and hear um 1 Your Love of children regardless of your um the role that you served in over time and I have several touch points I'm just going to very quickly share I was born a teacher I will die a teacher okay um I knew from a very early age that's what I was going to do so um I was in public education 34 years before I faked retired 8 years ago Thursday okay yeah so I've been with Advanced Ed these 8 years and 2 days but I'm not killing um but uh I too taught kindergarten that was my dream job I loved it did that I first started out in second grade did that for about 3 or 4 years I was also a school counselor then I was assistant principal served as assistant principal while our son we adopted so you do not have to birth a child to be the mother of them um that um so I did that for about 9 years as assistant principal while he was growing up but when he got to the sophomore in high school I thought okay it might be time to consider you know what I want to be next when I grow up so um I asked him I said how do you feel about me applying for this job I I won't be 5 minutes from you or even 1 minute from you like a half then I'll be 25 minutes away okay so he's in high school what do you think so um did that work about 7 years but I've learned so much in the past 8 years networking and working with great Educators across South Carolina and I tell them I'm a South Carolina educator first I'm a cognitive employee second and yes I know I'm being recorded but I firmly uh stand for what happens in South Carolina JFK said a rising tide floats all boats currently believe that and it is about this networking coming together that makes that happen So today we're just going to spend a little bit of time talking about cogni is continuous improvement process and how that relates to accreditation but in some cases it's it's vice versa is accreditation bring through continuous Improvement so let me say this first as a as a good teacher typically does I have much more content than we have time today but Dr Harrison and I will be back so what I'm doing is providing a high-level overview and I will be sharing the slides and that way we'll do um we'll do the highlight overview but when you see the slides you'll say hmm I don't necessarily remember that or a lot about that that's to come but I'm preset and for our the next time we spend together so just uh just know that so many of you that have been around as long as I have we've had some conversations know us from our early days as Southern Association of Colleges and Schools that we are celebrating our 130th anniversary this year that's the we've been working um as I said I will be sending the information uh to Dr whack you'll be able to share that with you this is our vision and we are a nonprofit and our vision is to be able to support students all students teaching and learning and we want to do that by being your partner and we're able to do that by the work that we do accreditation and that we've expanded over the past several years and we'll talk a little bit about what we need so mention 130 years we currently work with 40,000 schools and districts and we just hit our 100th country that we have credit in and support with Improvement efforts and we're very proud of that um it gives us a lot of data it gives us a lot of experience and expertise because not only are we sharing with our schools and districts we are learning from them as well and I tell folks I would be a better teacher counselor and administrator now if I went back for having benefited from uh working with across South Carolina so what does this look like in uh South Carolina specifically we support 1279 schools uh those schools um schools all under the 70 districts that we accredit 69 of the public districts in South Carolina uh 1 non-public that's the Diocese of Charleston so these schools uh summer stand alone on Public Works uh stem is very much on the rise I don't know why this is going in seeing the very much on the rise in South Carolina and uh we have 54 stem certified schools and 45 more Plus in the final 1 we also support 8 digital schools and 25 Early Learning schools and we Define early learning as those schools that support students kindergarten and below in a standalone facility so some systems have early learning uh facilities um and then we have some of the of those that are private so you can see we have plenty of work in South Carolina to support my with my team and I and it is a team member and we say this we know schools because we're in them and that is where it happens again I was born a teacher on diet that is where it happens in the classroom uh and so across the years we we have uh expanded our support and services uh accreditation we had stem certification we have CBE Competency Based uh Education certification we offer assessments customized um Solutions and a lot of other support um just depending on what schools and districts need basically today we're going to focus on the roles and responsibilities of the school board members as it relates to our performance standards and then a little bit about accreditation and continuous Improvement but we're just going to touch on that the 3 that are highlighted for our um content and and topics that we will touch more on wind Dr Harrison and I are back um whenever you have so today we're focusing more on this first in this hour so I want to take just a few minutes and I'm gonna say about 30 seconds for you to think what are you most proud of and what you believe as a as a school board member and what do you think is happening the most impact so I want you to just think for a few seconds you heard a text message so I got to look at and then it will ask anybody that wants to share so just think about those those 2 and for about 30 seconds and then we're going to share out okay okay who who would like to share I won't make you but I think that most proud probably as a school board member excuse me you know as being a school board member um I represent uh retirement community Sun City and they all have grandkids but that was amazing the percent of them that are so interested and supportive um public education not everybody and what I think is having the most impact positive impact uh is the the focus of the the teachers and administrators on improving student performance proposal spring um test score is going up number of kids on track going up um and that's what we're here to do so that's what I'm looking thank you yes ma'am 1 of the most proud of the fact that I had the opportunity to represent these people persons who I've known personally and not only that person in school are I don't know personally who Faith with me and the fact that I tried to not disappoint that I'm proud that um we do have a lease having the most constant impact on students and and our institution we talk about that in but I would also like to add that do we have staff who dedicated to making our students who were supposed to be the the report that they have with the students in the nurturing record Being educated you know the closer you are to your students even though you have to be this the best sometime the um when they know that you truly care they give you their best thank you for sharing what I'm most proud of background to represent School District entity that goes that uh the Administration has for the students wanting to see what is necessary now we know that not everyone needs to have a they can leave the certification that we are you know we are in the area and there um the uh Logistics is big and you know the man at the court of Charles and so we're able to get them here right out and not start at a minimum wage but they can start at a funeral um and again I'd like that 1 should and got the ballot to regarding the student just didn't receive the achievements to start our last 4 weeks this wonderful school where they have 82 C 77 have already uh you know so that to me what 1 of the things that I most proud of they're amazing just being able to be voice for our students and be able to communicate with the um Community you know to let them know about what's going on and the school district and to speak positive about the school so many times you have a low performing school and people this week so ladies and gentlemen but just to make sure that you get a positive uplift of it and I agree with both of us um everyone that spoke about about being a part of company what I believe in most positive is giving back to our students making sure that they have the the materials that they need you know and especially materials so because everything is so technology these days and just to make sure that they are able to have that and be a voice to say yes they need that and you can support those kind of things and just to know that we have students achievement at a board meeting and that is something that is very important to me to show the community that we are more put in the right direction pass means that my heart attack in this area that I put and to know that we have earlier to work with persons who are providing services for children they don't have any passing something that this possible and they thought it was possible because I think there were 3 or 4 more than that other and I'm proud of the fact of your focusing on learning focusing enjoy the the new school of the mountains so they can't have I know it's probably I'll take facility we built a cape facility on campus so that kids can access those subject areas instead of going off campus to another location facility so I'm really proud of that that was quite an accomplishment for us so thank you for sharing and a couple of of things I heard from you relationships with the community um and student outcomes certainly being at the heart of the work issues have what they need um I will share with you that my son is a freight broker and he talks about the you know what comes in and out if I were more about Freight you and um and the work that that is done at the ports and uh the work that happens once something comes into a quart and and moving things across the country and you're right that is a super opportunity that you have right here along with many many others and yes a cake program really goes back to what I mentioned about stem um stem was first may I believe as an elite add-on if you had extra money if you would have an influential area then you would offer stem that is not we all need to have the opportunity at the earliest of Ages to interact with um learning in a way that happens typically from beginning with kindergarten with that Hands-On learning and as we help our children have the opportunity to solve and think critics and yes we certainly literacy is a is a component of all of that we just if we help them learn how to think how to think how to make decisions is not a problem so they will be successful and and their literacy has to be where they can uh interact with the world and I don't negate uh math and certainly in the midst of that but some students and some like my nephew are much more interested in the science and just use the reading to get to what they want he wants to know and that's okay that's a back door and we'll take it because not always does that kids don't come to learn and in the same way and and to acknowledge that and offer offer the opportunities that support them in that way is great all right so thank you all so much for sharing that and I know that you could probably talk for an hour of Peace about this so I appreciate you keeping it to what you're most proud of and I'm certain you'll continue these conversations or at least I hope you will so we're going to talk and these slides are really um some of what I was talking about you're going to hear more about this today I'm your first presenter I know that uh and I appreciate your attention and I'm just going to uh move through these and you'll see connections to what you're going to hear later in the day about primary responsibilities for school boards and the vision and in the policy so this will be if I said shared with you uh this is just an idea to the uh think about it it's about that Vision I've heard a lot of vision and what you're talking about and what it takes for you within your relationships as a forward with each other and that doesn't mean you'll never agreeing have to sing Kumbaya and hold hands and then Skittles and rainbows and all those other things but it's coming to consensus on what is the best for your students in desert um County and being able to do that as a as a board so on the flip side of that there are times where we see that school board School Board struggle with um just different types of challenges and being able to help self-reflection can be really hard it can uh but I say um most of the time given the opportunity we're going to be harder on ourselves than anybody else could ever be and it's really important to be okay with um knowing where your strengths are and knowing where your challenges are and then being able to to openly you know share those where it's appropriate nobody's perfect and what 1 person don't water I can say that you all I know because of where we are um and it's okay and and when we know better we do better like I said I'd be a much better kindergarten teacher now I'd be a much better counselor I'd be a much better administrator now and I try to take all that learning to be better at what I'm doing now can't go back so I do say that 1 day I might teach kinder Garden again before I really retire it'll be 1 day 7 I'm not talking about it he died in line thank you but yes so um so just you know give yourself some time to to reflect so we're going to really focus in now on what do you need to know hopefully what do you want to know about the credit ation and this alignment with continuous improve accreditation is not uh an April the 15th of event we don't have about 10 minutes it's not an April 15th event like Pirates you know here you've got to gather all of this stuff and prove this and then what happens after we do that April 15th or really before it we go glad that's over that is not accreditation accreditation is about what you do routinely and regularly and when I say you I do mean you individually as a board member and collectively as a board that connection to continuous Improvement which absolutely hinges on student outcomes so we have 31 performance standards today is not the day for us today date but there's 1 in particular we're going to talk about but I do want to highlight we've added a standard 31 and it is built all around the student outcomes accreditation has student outcomes embedded in it through um a scent analysis and synthesis of data but this is further elevated as of July 1 2025 through this um 31st standard so really putting that emphasis on we can be doing great things but if it's not impacting student outcomes we need to think about that and I'm not here to tell you what like about I'm just here to say you know ask but I ask each other the hard questions what's happening and we can't just ask each other we've got to go out into the community and we've got to talk to I will tell you as a kindergarten and I think my friend at the back who said kindergarten teacher will tell you if you ask them they will tell me don't think they're too young and certainly by third or fourth grade they have some very strong opinions and okay middle schoolers they're sort of in their own little worlds you know but if that's okay we we can't leave them out because they're in this very moldable place and we need to hear from because again they'll tell me if we ask them they will tell you so don't don't forget that as you move forward so our standards are based in research we believe in continuous Improvement that is the organization that we are and that's why through these 31 standards we focus on the student we focus on role Clarity from all of our uh stakeholders what does the classroom look like what does the school look like what does it feel like what are we offering in the learning process what are our non-negotiable instructional strategies do we have a instructional framework and then 5 then we allow teachers through action research to be able to say this is working for me let me share it with somebody else to be encouraged to do that because I promise you you may have um you may have an Educators that um you may have heard this or that but I guarantee you that's negative but I guarantee you that educator brings to the classroom a string that may not have yet been uncovered just like it is with our learners we are adult Learners and it is so important to tap into our educators strengths not to say to ignore where um we falter make mistakes but certainly we are our strengths because I will tell you the most abundant resource you have and it's free is in house expertise and you have every educator has something to offer to the group as a whole and being able to tease that out and find it then as they are teasing out what are these strange our students have we're coming from a strengths perspective you know if you get beat over the head all the time with your bad at this so keep doing more of it well okay but are we balancing that with what are you good at and how can you use what you're good at to get better at what you're maybe not so good at and that again is a part of the boat board's perspective to balance that yes we have strengths yes we acknowledge that yes we have a plan and the plan includes what we're doing so in our work going back to the old days of sacks and in ss-see way back I'm talking and it's in the okay mindset shift I am not about telling we need to see Focus finders boxes and barrels of of paper evidence from you need to self assess on is what are we doing how does it connect to this research face frame of of Standards 31 standards and how can we use that in our daily work our daily board not daily board meeting but in our daily thinking about our school community to support us moving forward that future Focus we can't go back but we're going to acknowledge where we've been we're going to build on that that's our foundation but this mindset shift we can be better and we will be there so thinking of it not not as um accreditation is important and it's your way forward because it's a framework duplication of effort is a makes the nobody's got time to do anything 2 times and do it right do it well so do it 1 time make it a line because it does natural and as the forward of line with each other align with your community align with your schools and your school leadership align with your students and went off that align you'll hear Angels Sing I can say that here to so very quickly we want to look at these these are our key characteristics meaning that each of the 31 standards falls under a group Culture of learning leadership or learning engagement of learning that's all about what's allowed for with our students voice and choice and then growth to learn how do we know they're growing how do we know they're ready for the next level how do we know their meetings standards it's not all about an end of year assessment it is about where do they start and how far can we get them in a year and we've got that accelerate learning and do that to find helping them find what is relevant to um to help you today on the 1st standard in particular that calls out school board members I want us to look at this together and we'll leave it with you uh certainly so it's standard 8 so in all of the standards you'll see it may say the leaders the Learners um it may name um Collective stakeholder groups but nowhere does it call out a particular cluster of people like it does in school and you'll see that in this standard card and what this is is for standard 8 it shows you the standard at the top under the key characteristic of leadership for learning and the standard date says the government name of art that's you the government Authority demonstrates a commitment to Learners by collaborating with leaders to uphold the institution's priorities and to drive continuous Improvement so you see that that's that's a fairly short sentence with a lot of impact sorry about that so I want you to look at this 1 card for Saturday there are 30 more of these for the other standards and that's where uh we'll support you as you move forward but this is the 1 that says hey governing Authority School Board here's your parts the city not to say you don't touch the other standards but this is the 1 where is hold you accountable I'll just say and we're here in that word a lot accountability if we did admit it good or bad and I used to tell my kids as an assistant principle if you did it admit it and quit it you know but if you're whatever it is know what your responsibilities are and be laser focused because I can tell you your platter not your plate your platter can get overflowing real fast but if you focus on everything to focus on nothing multitasking is a your head Can Only Hold 1 all at a time we were built that way so we've got to narrow our priorities we and 3 to 5 but 5 is a lot but if they align with each other then working on 1 is also working on another but you've got to keep it where you are lazy and focused and it's not to say there's a lot of laundry list of other things you need to work on but their time has not yet come this is why this process is so important to identify the laundry list and then say okay but this list of priorities these 3 if we do this well then we can move on to the next ones and these 3 are going to have impact on the rest of them and we know that but we are want to be focused and that is where the school board has a responsibility to keep the district future focused and the know what that is what those Focus areas are so I believe this with you the rubric I just want to talk briefly about this is that self assessment piece so you'll see in the rubric the governing authorities policies and decisions are regularly reviewed to ensure and uncompromised commitment to Learners and I'm not going to go further but I'm going to go to level 3 the governing authorities policies and decisions demonstrate a commitment so you can start to say the variation in language between a 4 and a 3 and let me say this there probably are not any forms 4 is we can always be better tomorrow 3 is our our of golf for all of the if you're at a 3 your meeting our expectations however I will say if you're at a 2 you got to own it you got to say it okay we are out of tune and here's how we know here's other documentation that we have on how we know and here's where we can now move forward with this with that future Focus so and I say that to schools and districts across the South Carolina if you're too wherever it is it's okay it's okay just don't own it know it and if you have multiple tubes that's an opportunity to prioritize but this 1 standard 8 truly yours so we'll dig deeper into this when uh Dr Harrison and I come back but I wanted you to have this to to start your thing so that's again is the rubric that you already have so very quickly let me check the time okay I'm okay for about 5 more minutes who's my time keeper okay all right so candidacy review that's when you first started your accreditation then our accreditation engagement reviews we've learned a lot about how to use technology and like I said it's no longer an event but you're picking people up airport and you're catering meals and you got to find hotels at Exit 8 for a bunch of folks and who has dietary restrictions the bulk of that work can be done by interviewing and getting information up face to face through Zoom but we also do come on site we also have special reviews determined by our accreditation leadership what is a particular concern we have monitoring reviews that are on site that again is hyper focused on a particular concern and then monitoring reviews those are all unities where there's something that with to maintain the Fidelity of accreditation is our way of continuing to provide support and so for those are I wanted to share those with you so the purpose of our accreditation review however it happens is to provide you feedback and you're going to get that in a report for all of the standards all of the analyses and then it's going to help you see where you self-rated as a district against the 31 standards and then as the external team what evidence do they see and in their expertise and professional training through us they're all former Educators um want to think back can they give you with the standards and rating sometimes the the ratings match sometimes they don't sometimes we see it higher than you do sometimes we see it lower um sometimes we see it just the same so the process is that self assessment piece that I talked about then the review and then we asked 4 years in for a follow up and so that's the process that's in place to keep us off of mine because it can be easy to say oh it's not our accreditation here um this is a cycle this is where we're sort of like um the IRS it is it is something that needs to be top of mind for what um about that today I do want to talk about 1 more thing though with you and I will hand this out to you um there is 1 Assurance specifically also for school boards and our assurances are those things that that are either uh written into legislation or a mandated um by the state department all of the things that have to be done um to maintain accreditation next week to maintain good standing with the state department and I will tell you we coordinate and collaborate with the state department around our accreditation and update them on what's happening in our districts that we support I said earlier this through the systems model we are credit uh all but 3 districts in um in South Carolina and 2 of those are and maybe maybe the third 1 so um so Assurance 4 again this is the 1 that that specifically speaks to the board the governing Authority up here so written policies that is kind of decision making ethics and authority and engages in training aligned to his roles and responsibilities and again part of what you you'll hear later today is that part of that last and maybe some of the others so that assurance and you know I just have to say that sometimes as adults we make mistakes and we behave in ways that um we wouldn't want our children to do I've seen teachers being a in a staff meeting with me and they're on their phones I'm like really you and you know so we've got to hold ourselves to that higher standard of um how we present ourselves individually and I know you know that but I also know you know people that caught in the moment and forget and so it's just so important and I'm I say this for the benefit of myself it's really easy to um to get lost in that sometimes so that is for is the 1 that is specific to our so this part I'm just going to talk through very quickly we do have a policies and procedures for superintendent what you have access to that in our online platform but if you need that certainly let me know give me more information that you can get back in the report um this is homework and this is where I'm really going to to stop for today and this question for you to think about is how will you all as leaders of the district collaborate to ensure your District effectively address and this is post review areas for improvement within the AAR which you can go back to your last report and sustains continuous Improvement and noteworthy practices not every District group has no worthy practices um but but some do and those are the things that are doing above and beyond those are the occasional Force somewhere within the standards or multiple but what I want really focus on is the first part of that how will you all as leaders of the district collaborate to ensure I can end the sentence improving student outcomes because that's what anything else is going to be about from a systems approach and you're the you're the hinge of that systemic approach as you so support your areas within this County of Jackson so that's the homework I'm going to leave you with and I imagine uh there may be opportunities for you to think about that more today so I do just very quickly want to say okay you see additional information this is where we're not really going to touch on today um it'll give you an opportunity to review um for when we come back I love this 1 I but I want you to find a bold and Innovative new way to do everything exactly the same way we've been doing it for 25 years we got to get out of routines can become runs and it's your wisdom experience and expertise to figure out where the ruts we're stuck in to be able to Get on um more for you to think about again more for you to think about before we come back what continuous Improvement is and what it is not your role in that we want something we've never had in our schools we need to do something we've never done so we thank you for your commitment uh we know it's hard work there are no easy jobs in education and you said you're married to an educator my husband says the hardest thing is not being an educator but being married to 1 he sold me that for 40 years we just celebrated our anniversary um in November so you touch truly the future you've heard this but now you're you're in the sea to do it and we thank you for it any questions this is my contract information course Dr whack probably as in your speed down marketing Jennifer Thomas supports our work as a briefing on you but always certainly reach out to to me and I will be sending this to Dr W to share with you any thoughts or questions all right well I've I've probably even in my intent to give you a high level overview I hope I've given you a lot of things to think and when we think then the questions come and so I do I have the answers to know the answers are within you that's where the answer I just come with you to prompt you and maybe to think of it in a different way so I think you all for everything you do and we are here to support you and have a great rest of your day couple of minutes of a break uh gentlemen I'm hoping it's all here itself I'm ready to start this next section place you good morning everybody so before you start please explain what CPT um that needs I'm a certified professional and talent development so we have to go through rigorous rigorous certification process to be able to get up here to talk to you all about leadership um teamwork conflict Advantage but all those things that are important in terms of people working together as a team so yeah there is an association for talent development for those of us who are trainers and facilitators and instructional designers and we have to get certified every be used to do this work so and I've been certified for I mean what 2013 or all right so I appreciate the invitation to be here today thank you so much for inviting me um especially Mr M founder sometime way that's right the School Board Association and in that this presentation I made to them in January and their Retreat so this is the exact presentation they found it to be useful to them and I hope it will be to you as well so we're going to go ahead and get started yes I in the work that I've been doing for the past 19 years the leadership development specifically that that's the focus of my business I've been in business um since May of 2006 um in Colombia but I have trained and facilitated and coached uh across this country over that time and I've had pretty much gained a good insight into people in human behavior and how we act on teams and how we lead an incredibly important for us to recognize those particular skills sets that are necessary in order for our teams to work effectively and So based on all that I've gathered over this time I'm going to share with you 3 things I think are incredibly important in terms of making teams function at a high level so I'm going to be talking to you as Leaders because I believe everybody in here is a leader and but I want to talk to you as Leaders who are part of a team and so we're going to look at what I found over these years is a team is only as good as the participants on it so everybody's working at their highest level and doing what they're supposed to do in their particular role on this team then the team will move in the passionate issue at that high level but there's some things that get in the way so I I I've learned over the years that if we're going to talk about individualism on team we have to look at the impact that we have as an individual or any team so this section or section that we're going to be doing is based solely on you you have full permission to be totally self-absorbed okay this is all about you it's not about looking at anybody else in the room or point the finger here or there or anything like that it's about doing some deep inner work and looking at us and saying okay how do I impact the work and how do I impact people around me so that's that's what that whole look inside of me so we're going to look at self-awareness as incredibly important to look at self-awareness so I want to start with a quick story um um I was doing some reading around decision making 1 time critical decision makers and I came across a story about um uh a fire that occurred back in 1949 in a place called man G Montana so we're talking about I don't know 75 76 years ago there was a group of 5 Fighters they call them smoke jumpers it's about a dozen of us so they're being led by a man called wag God when God was kind of a will call later he uh was said to be 1 who didn't show a lot of expression or emotion so he's kind of hard to read um he didn't talk a whole lot to his team so they can sit in the be a little bit of a poor communicator he didn't really extend himself to his team so they could get to know him and understand him and recognize what um it mattered in terms of the work that he was doing they didn't know his level of of experience um they didn't know enough about him to costume so they go to man go where there's a so-called routine fire that's occurring and they have to follow his lead well I don't know about y'all if I don't trust the person I'm not likely to follow them right so but we're talking about a fire a fire that started off pretty routine but ended up turning into this big infernal rapidly and it moves so fast that people didn't really know what to do in that moment and they did know whether they should trust his leadership but not because they didn't know him so it takes off this far just explodes they have to make decisions and Rapid Fire and nobody really knows what to do even him because this was an unusual situation so he tells him listen I got an idea and he poses to them that he would burn the the the grass around them so that it would stop the fire in which coming I mean if there's nothing to burn it would jump over right that was a great idea and he thought I think we've never done it before Walker and they didn't know and they were like do we try this guy and you tell him to drop all your tools you know cuz we got to lay down here and let this fire jump over well I don't know for a firefighter dropping your tool says I've lost you know they associate their strength and their control with their tools if you drop your tools you say you you've given it to the Spy so they didn't like that and they didn't listen so there are a few of them who thought they could run and that was the worst worst decision you could all right so here's the big the big issue that occurred it was the leadership that caused these people not just in time but in life 3 of them died because they wouldn't listen to what he said and his idea actually what he would say that a lie down and fire jump across him over to the other parts that were yet unburned and he survived but here's where it got to be an issue so when you're talking about building credibility with your team you have to be with your team you have to explain to them what it is that you expect from them what they can expect from you how they can rely on you and be dependent upon you how we can work together collaboratively and uh cohesively how we want to be cooperative with 1 another because at the end of the day our goal is to serve the people who are looking to us to help right to do the work that we're supposed to do what do not attend of the training with his people all right now here's here's here's the guy who's supposed to be you know people say you be by example so he sent his people to the training that he didn't attend even if you think you know the work and you're experienced at it it's still helpful to be in the room to be present with your people it gives you an opportunity for them to get to know you a little bit better they haven't worked with him before in fact none of them had worked with each other before so they didn't even tell that they didn't know him so credibility and Trust did not have a chance to get built relationships either so you know we got people who are just coming together a group of people coming together the common goal was what they weren't sure and things got out of control with the experiences of life so they lack confidence in him they like confidence in his abilities and he lost a not just people but an opportunity time to grow and to teach people more about them so when it comes to I tell this whole story for is reason when it comes to leadership it's about knowing who's on your team and it's about knowing you we have to do some deep Dives and figure out what is it that necessary in order for us to work together as a team how can I and then even if I have the title as an individual lead on this team all right and so I want to look at this in terms of our own self we're going to try to do 3 things in a short time that we've had together first of all there are 3 pitfalls that you have to be careful of when it comes to building self-awareness we're going to build a a a a more insight into us for us also I'm going to offer you 3 models that have helped you in terms of doing some critical self-examination how can you get to know you unless you do a little bit of introspective work and then finally we're going to look at how does the way I like to do things impact everybody else on the team all right and this is going to be interactive so I'm looking forward to you all sharing and I'm going to ask a lot of questions uh in that regard so let's first just kind of give a little bit of a definition around what self-awareness is so it's pretty plain self-awareness is the ability to see yourself clearly and incredibly through reflection and introspection the ability to see yourself clearly and objectively through and what does that mean to you and that is a question it's not rhetorical I'm seeking input who stands out to you in that definition you know sometimes we we see who we want to see and so nobody see who we want to see and not take get this out ourselves and tell people all the time take yourself out of yourself look at you and so so that there's a pitfall you can only see what you want to say because you don't want to take really up again anybody else any words in particular stand out for you in that definition objectively which is what I think is D is talking about right can we be objective when examining ourselves do you think we can I think you can to a certain degree but it will be difficult why is it difficult because we know who we're supposed to be who we think we are right and of course when we see ourselves we see ourselves in the best way I do a lot of coaching I'm a certified coach as well so I coach teams and I coach individuals usually incorporation it's a a manager or supervisor having trouble with their team or it might be too individual right and so a lot of times when I'm asking them to take a look at what's going on in the situation when they tell the story of course they're the victim and the other person's the bill right every time we tell our story it's about how we were wrong and not necessarily how other people you know you know what we've done to other people so we have a very slanted view of what the truth is your truth it doesn't mean you're lying it's just how you see it which is going to be how you see yourself in the best possible way so we got to figure out how to do this objectively all right reflection and introspection are different in this way reflection is about looking at something that the person that pays you're looking back on something and it has a lot of external stuff to it all right so you're looking at maybe the situation or all of the stuff associated with it introspection is present and its internal so this is about you looking at you right now in this moment and asking yourself some tough questions all right some that might be hard and painful to deal with but nonetheless it's about the honestly that you want to have about yourself so this this um this definition says that we have to step out of ourselves like this Daisy said here and do some really tough and hard work in terms of seeing so 1 of the pitfalls though of us being able to do that and and I want you to tell me why is it or what is it I guess I should say it's a 3-letter word that stands in the way of us being honest about our own behavior yes ego ego how about that's exactly what it does I can't be objective cuz I'm looking I'm too full of who I think I am I love the way this philosophy said he said your ego is your self-image created by thought this is how you think of you and there's nothing wrong with you having high esteem High self-esteem we encourage other people right but there's something called overconfidence bias which means I think a little bit too highly of myself so much so that I can't see my by the validation because it isn't fair of losing its sense of identity so whatever I have created about myself within me I will wear that I need to tell it to you as often as I can y'all anybody ever dealt with a narcissist so not to tell you all day about how great they are how much they know how much they've done right they're way way up here and they're telling you that because not only are they trying to condition you to think about them in a way they see themselves but they need you to tell it back to them that validation because the more I can get you to say it to me the better I feel about me when deep down a lot of narcissists are really insecure people that's why they got to run around and tell you how great they are because they don't really believe in themselves all right so this ego gets in the way it's hard to be objective if my ego is in the way well we need to break that down just a little bit so I I I raised certain issues that get in the way of self-awareness but I also like to by a certain um solutions to how we fix it so what we have to do is remove ourselves so we can get here I don't know if this is y'all's Mission I want to pull it off the off the website I love it all right but I the school district so y'all should be in line with whatever food that you did so if we remove ourselves we can get here this is what you're supposed to be here to do regularly right you you are a servant leaders whether you see yourselves that way now you are serving children you're serving you're creating Futures you know when you really think about the depth of this how important it is it's just not about you sitting here having meetings and talking through budgets and policies and procedures and all this kind of stuff that is there a roommate impact the people in the community especially the children and their parents in huge ways right so we have to make sure that this is always ever present in front of us whenever you have any doubt or you start losing sight of go back to why don't we here what's our why what time is this and get us back in touch here so here's what I um I'm going to pose in terms of us holding ourselves accountable and doing some introspective work so there's a little bit of an equation that have come up with over the years because in my coaching what what I normally do is so there'll be told you it's always some conflict between 2 parties right so as part of the whole work I might say that hey I want you to go back and think about what occurred between you and the other side and I want you to come back and tell me all sides what what what happened from your perspective and how do you think the other side to do it too and every time almost every time the person comes back and here this well they did this or they did that or my manager did or the system that or you know uh my workload is too heavy because my boss doesn't respect that I have all of this other stuff to do or their clicks that are formed on um in within our department so they ostracized me I'm not on any team right they just kind of push me off to the side it's always they they they them them them them them what everybody else has done and so when I started hearing it and more of this I realized there's something that's missing in this introspective work that I've asked this person or these people to go and do and so it come it just feels it like this the self-examination they do is very external and it's all about how everybody else is coming at them what's missing is this this accountability piece because so often we can point a finger at somebody else and what they're not doing or what you know how they've affected you but we don't often have sounds accountable to what part we played in it as well and I find that if we can add accountability then we get more solid introspective work it becomes way more meaningful it's hard but if becomes way more meaning because here's what it looks like ultimately when people aren't adding accountability to you know this work that they're doing they end up on 2 ends of the spectrum the first is this 1 I am the victim all right because I can make myself a victim if I don't own the parts that I may have had in there so instead of my boss is giving me too much work to do and they don't respect what I contribute a tough in a hard look at myself might say but how am I using my time I got late right now who's the secretary and she complains and complains and complains that she don't work for me but I know the office she's in and she calls me and she complains that she says I'm doing the work at 2 or 3 people which very true but you also on the phone with me for 30 or 45 minutes now is it really going to work like you is not using your time let's be honest here okay or the person who said yeah these people about the size me there are these I'm not invited well how are you amongst these people are you easy to work with are you difficult maybe people don't want to be around you because you're too difficult to deal with right so you know if we can say let look at my part in this um it moves us from this place of victimhood all right accountability says I won't be a victim I'm going to own the part for me that I can and I'm going to make changes the other side of that spectrum is the hero complex so I also have those people who feel like I'm the best thing since sliced bread right I've been here 20 years I've been here 30 years what can you tell me that I don't already know so they don't hold themselves accountable to being open to change and new things happening and you know all the things that are necessary in order for them to lead or be a part of that team well because they shut themselves off they closed down and not owned the parts of them that needs to be changed to stay open and so now they think you're the hero and we can't help them to see things differently so the person in the middle is the self-aware person the person who is a combination of the 2 so they're not so insecure that they see themselves as a victim but they're not so overconfident that you can't talk to them through you know what we need to be doing differently all right they put themselves in between the 2 and say yes there's some things about me I know that I can do differently there's some ways I can contribute to the team in a different way there's a little bit sure that I can do there's some places I can pull back when it's necessary all of those things in order to save let me look at me deeply and not only am I looking at me but I'm looking at what changes I need to make because here's the other part of this there are people who are self where but they don't do anything to change so I got people say oh that's just the way I am they just got taken care of I had no they don't write um so that's just a cop out they gave it accountability because I just don't hold my phone all right all right so what does it look like there to be deeply introspective we got to ask ourselves some tough questions I'm going to give you a few of them up here and then I'm going to ask you to come up with at least 1 or 2 that you think if you could ask me all right questions like this what do I need to change about myself am I holding on to something I need to let go of what given a phone when did I last push the boundaries of my comfort zone and y'all I can send these to y'all too I don't mind sharing it let's see y'all right here what is this job our role asking of me whose opinion do I trust enough to ask for feedback and what kind of impact am I having on a success of others right kind of thought-provoking pretty decent questions to ask right so I'm going to give you like 2 minutes 3 minutes and in your handout I think I got something I want you to write at least 1 question at least 1 maybe 2 that you feel are are introspective enough for you what kind of question should you be asking as you do this for of looking inside of you and challenging yourself challenging yourself to be honest with you I'll give you a couple minutes 346 all right who wants to share what's 1 question you came up with and I trusted inspected enough to initiate positive change that's great who else just how did I get there here that's some serious reflection right there you know and then I highly encourage that you take time to do that I think we get so caught up in our day-to-day that we don't take enough time to really sit and think you know sit with a question like and it doesn't have to be an hour 1015 minutes you know just time to ask yourself that question is review how did you hear where it here is what what is here mean to you you know am I hearing a good place I'm out here in a rut place and I don't know I got here right what is what does that look like who else question 1 more yes am I able to open myself up to a deeper conversation if the answer is yes then what can can can I receive the dialogue that that yes absolutely uh huh all right this is not um you know this you know kind of stuff therapy so I do feel like I'm a therapist I am not but it really does require remember I said it's about self-examination it's about introspection we can't go forward forward um staying the way we are and situations that we are working in a place and I hope I'm not coming on to strong theology this come correct every time I can all right and and a lot of times when I find with clients of mine they'll invite me Oh Daddy we need a little teamwork oh we need a little leadership training or whatever and then you get in and you feel like it's a you find out it's a disaster they work very honest with you right so I come in with the expectation that there are issues even if nobody says anything but sometimes we have to surface things by bringing them up um I also will say this there's not a single place I've been in where there hasn't been some something of a challenge because as long as you have different people they're going to be challenged y'all it's common it's not to be afraid of it it's not to say uh you're in this bubble and you're the only ones who go through challenges everybody does because you're not carbon copies of other you have your own mind your own thoughts your own experiences and so you have a way of doing things that way you think that'll be done done um you've uh been through some um uh other experiences that others may not have and so at some point or another you're going to run into each other in terms of how things ought to get done right the the biggest it's it's not if you're going to have the issue it's about how you handle the issue when they arrive so what we have to get good at is how manage conflicts on our teams because conflict is inevitable it is going to occur but can we Face it and keep our relationships intact all right that that could be questioned and that's why we're doing this so all right so that being said y'all had great questions so how do you apply what we just discussed the whole goal in this is it's a Saturday morning and y'all have lives but you have taken the time out of your busy lives to be in here today so how do we make the best use of that time and the goal is not to just say oh we went through a training today is to say what in this training that did we go through that was useful to me all right so with that being said the question is just based on this little all the time we talked about this portion of self-awareness how are you going to use what you just learned what will you do differently nobody's going to sit down with themselves and ask themselves a couple questions that's the easy answer do you think you can do you think do you think it's worth it all right so that's what I'll hold you to that when you leave here today at some point through the week you're going to find some time you're going to carve out some important time to think on this all right beautiful all right so that was Pitfall number 1 in solution number 1 here's phone number 2 when it comes to being more self-aware there is a lack of meaningful feedback and information sharing that gets in the way of us learning more about us and our impact on our teachers all right y'all kind of alluded to it a little bit earlier but how do we Miss Daisy said it's hard for us to be objective when we're doing a review and an examination so if it's hard for us to get out of the bias that comes with exam ing us then what must we do if our part right here meaningful feedback we have to seek it you got to get somebody from the outside to help you to see you all right so here's the method I would do and this is super super super um um simple you may have seen this this this little method I'm going to show you right now has been around since the mid 15 it is called the Johari window model anybody's familiar with this 1 it's been around for a little while all right so very very simple for everybody who does not know these 2 guys named Joe and Harry came up with this it looks like a window with 4 paintings doesn't it so what but this here basically they say where they want where everybody should be in in this upper pan over here that's called The Arena when you think about Arena what do you think of in terms of how it's set up if I if I put you smack dab in the middle of an arena how exposed are you wide open right you can see everything and everybody can see you all right we're talking about Communications right now and we're talking about us being more self-aware so if we are in this Arena we're open everything is wide open nothing here this is where we want to be and it's critical when it comes to being a part of the team however the authors also say that and by the way it's about since we're talking about Communications it's about sharing information so these are things you know and these are things everybody else knows too because had this wide open communication over here our blind spots that get in the way so the blind spots of those things you don't know about you but other people can see yeah anybody ever almost uh uh move over into somebody's Lane when you right they can see you but you can't see them that's what this is this is about me not being able to see those things about myself that I need to know then they say there's a facade these are things you know but other people don't know so are we sharing enough information with people I'll give you an example of what this looks like these societies hidden things um there was a gentleman 1 time years and years ago when I first started doing this work 4 or 5 Hospital I think they're very um you know in order to uh make sure I have job security I make sure that I'm the go-to guy so there's anything anybody needs to know I hope things until they have to come to me so please manipulating information so that he thinks he can have more value and people will come to him only when they saw the land people he was the 1 the first ones to go because his manager realized he wasn't a team player he was hiding stuff to give himself more value and causing the team in some instances to lose value right another um facade is uh a manager who told me he was so upset when he lost 1 of his best workers this person came to work was 1 of I mean just on it on time high performing the whole thing but then all of a sudden he turns in his resignation and the manager is shocked did not know because this guy kids the fact that he hated his right he did not like it over there there were things going on that weren't discussed had not been surfaced so he left and it was very costly to that company to lose that kind of talent so people hide things all the time these besides of the social masks you were talking about with this over here these are things you don't know and others don't know and you probably need to go lie down on somebody all right so we're not going to touch touch that right there this is something our area but what we want to do then in improve our communication is reduced on the lines by and reduced the facade so how do we do that all right well if blind spots are things you don't know but other people know what do we need to do then take that information yeah simple is that just ask likewise if these where the society is if this is what you know what others don't know then what do you have to do yeah that's right example back and forth I need the things that you need to know that I have information about and there are things that uh I need to know that you might be able to tell me and it's incredibly important that we make this meaningful and high quality in terms of witnessing s*** sometimes we don't know what we don't know so I might have information um regarding a decision that needs to be made or some content or context uh around uh something we you working on at the board but I might not know that I need to share that with everybody I may have just gone over here to miss Bergie and told her that everybody else needs to know at least 3 other people might even know right so sometimes we just don't well that's why you got to have these Communications to determine you know um what important and valuable in terms of us sharing and then also helped me to understand how I'm impacting everybody else on the team so sitting down and having those kinds of important conversations all right so with that being said uh let's just do a little bit of a critical analysis let's say discipline individual and this is what they're they're uh models they're women model looks like what kind of what can we surmise from this if this is how their what could be going on with this person and they to share or receive information so they don't really know themselves even how we think about all the unknowns that are there they're probably sharing a little bit more don't get Ted any more than they're asking of themselves too yeah you know but these need to be open we're looking for this right yeah so when you think about you and what everything looks like with your group on this board in your handouts it should be a little model of the the window model there and on this we're going to partner up so find a partner somebody sit with and I want you to fill in those blank spots as best you can what are some potential blind spots what should we be asking in order to reduce those and what should we be sharing to reduce the facade is there information that um that is regular information that we don't often get to talk about what do we need to be surfacing things along that line all right I'm going to give you give you a couple of minutes 2 3 minutes to work on that y'all not gonna say the world or anything to do so I'll give you much time but in about 2 or 3 minutes can y'all fill in those blanks all right by the department I know someone thinking about everything I I am also learning that perspective adjustments you might need more time so I'm interested in hearing from at least 1 or 2 groups what you come up with what you put in your blind spot would you put in your facade specifically and also the arena is about what you are doing well too by the way it is where you offer things okay someone wants a s*** go ahead basically I was looking at my blind spots and 1 of 1 of the feedback that I got was ultimately I I end up sharing too much information when I gather information I tend to want to share okay so that in this case everybody on the board understands what I what I'm seeing and and sometimes that's too much yeah and and so for you you have to figure out where is enough and the rest of them can help you figure that out because you know sometimes there are people who are just there in particular and detail oriented and so for folks like you I have a young lady that works with me like that too I was good like 10 pages ago when you send this report right I want to give you the first 2 right so don't wait don't don't don't complicate what is simple all I need is these things because I'm big picture you know that make you write or me wrong or by first we just do things differently all right so it's understanding what works on the team yeah very good all right who else turned out I need to talk about um taking that someone knows something that you don't know so somebody knows something you don't know can you get any more specific especially as it relates to your service on the board assuming that number of board members more things that the others that's okay that there is maybe some type of second priority board meeting to have the you happen to agree on the same thing and it was a collision oh gotcha all right yeah yeah yeah yeah all right so we're just like-minded in our thinking but it appears that we had these separate meetings because we are in agreement when we come in need gotcha all right yeah that's a trust issue and that's what we have yeah trust is always the big 1 for our team absolutely yeah and that trust like relationships is built over time so it's about what you're showing you know the people on your team over and over and over again um those friends of behavior of what you can trust because people are going to be truly who they are really I mean you know watch their behavior open and y'all know that old 1 that everybody likes to quote that my Angela said you know if a person shows you who they are so you can trust it because you're going to see it repetitively but in in instances like that where there's a belief that's a misunderstanding that needs to be addressed otherwise what happens it never gets resolved and you know what it keeps certain it'll resurface and resurface and resurfaced in the worst ways yes and then now you got you know this thing that becomes hardened as part of your team and it gets more difficult because it's a mindset that needs to be changed the little Amber becomes write that story that we talked about a little while ago yeah it's it's uh we're on fire right yeah absolutely okay anybody else before I move on with the sword um you know that that is an agenda I'm going to you know I'm going that that think this is what I want them to do I want them to know within me I don't have another reason I have a a hidden agenda what I want My outcome and I sometimes to to divide mhm and so that you thought I put all that like like I'm in agreement with you and I'm going to do this but I know that when push comes to shove I'm going to go somewhere there again trust you Prospect and so how do we get how do we restore well first of all trust that's been broken let me ask you this trust has been broken do you think can be restored yes we got 2 different opinions so tell me why you believe in you tell me why not okay so I was married to someone for 32 years and they grow interest for me because I believe it a spirit the spirit created the universe cares about people I had to work on Trust that person to your wife I had to go sit with him okay when they say that someone who's someone I should tell you crazy but choice would not be able to do that but because of who I believe what I believe species and so I don't necessarily and if I find out that you have a good agenda I want to schedule okay this Seek and Destroy yes everyone says if you don't get to the point where that lovely baby has or something because people will see Who We Are regardless of what we think absolutely and you're a very public facing entity and yeah bolsters insightful enough to know if there's any issues that arise in there absolutely yeah so you use the word forgiveness and that's what we can hang our cat making or renewing Trust takes a while though and so we got to give each other Grace and allow for that to grow over time but it's also a 2-way street so you can do the forgiving but the other side also has work to do you know whether that's an apology or also a reciprocal forgiveness thing or whatever whatever is required but 1 side cannot do all the work if there is a um a genuine interest in resolving situations then both sides have to come to the table lay out all the cards be very Frank open and honest and come with the intention of making things better all right and I'm going to take us back to that cuz that's what we're really here to do got to honor that mission we can't let anything intern get in the way of that because that that mission and how many students y'all got this is okay that that mission impact almost 3,000 people that's a lot and so what 9 10 of y'all 9 or 10 people should not stand in the way of that right you know this thing um to do because once trust has been broken it takes longer to get that trust back did you first met this person and I thought it would make it so hard to to get that trust back is the fact that in order for me to to convince somebody that I am trustworthy I have to First be genuine Within Myself I I have to know that I am I am not who I think I am and then if you willing to go to that person and have it they have to say and and receive that but so many times we receive ourselves because we still don't want to accept Who We Are and that's another hard thing to do the little thing yourself and say you know I'm not who I think I am that's what we're talking about still in that awareness itself right so do you think because I thought I've heard here that you said no trust could not be improved or was it no no you don't when it says I was I was going to say that person is not a 1-way street it takes 2 to to make it work and although you might want to make up and move on that person might say well you know don't talk to me anymore it's over yeah you can't do it by yourself you know the most you'll be able to do it the part you can't control which is the Forgiveness piece and then you do have to move on yeah yeah and that's how you yeah I said no um when you put your address in someone and they keep open the truck over and over again how can we restore that um example Monday night's meeting was a software for me um and just like Miss golden and Mr Moyes 2 minutes ago about having a meeting before the meeting it made me felt that they had the meeting before the meeting because I was a student on the clock so um at that point I don't trust I don't trust but very minimal people on this board that I can talk to so no the trust is very hard to restore do you have a willingness to repair what what do you feel has been broken right now I can't say I didn't and what standing in the way of that besides yourself um the reaction of them the reaction of the going numbers and what are you seeing in terms of the reaction um seeing that that on the outside on yeah I know it's bad by the way to set up it go ahead on the outside on the I'm the 1 that say keep going to Priscilla today pick on Priscilla tomorrow you know this is this is her time at the meeting like let's take on her I mean I I don't see them changing so I'm going to ask you a hard question so remember I said earlier how we victimize ourselves and we make everybody else so where does Priscilla come in in terms of contributing to what because I'm I'm seeing you're saying it's everybody else but you're by yourself I don't know if that's true or not that's your perception that's your truth so that's what you believe I don't know the you know whatever else is going on but it it does spark that question in my mind is it everybody else or is there a contributing factor in your part I the things that I consider the tool is just that they have this I I guess because i'm the ones that ask questions and want to get answers to the questions that I want to ask um and and I guess question asking a hard question and they don't want to know the answer to it I don't know so can I ask a question about this recipe because there's been um an assessment Levy here um and so it says it's out here on the table it's her perception of what's Happening really uh I think part of it is no I think assumption that I get for a while is that there's a bunch of us that get together to make some decisions and that's not true know and I think perception that questions she asks that is the issue is also a problem consumption is not the question she's asking some of the behaviors that are in my view and with those policy interactions question in my mind so yeah I have a difference in terms of how you're seeing this same situation you're saying that there are meetings that are happening in uh in that they are in collusion of sorts in um in your position and the things that you're doing all right so you're you're seeing them in some way where they're needing together and they're this this uh US versus you I think they're saying no that's not the case it's certain behavioral things that's turning them off to you so they don't mind that you ask the questions you can ask the questions they're not having meetings even though that's the perception so some there's a gap there between what you and what they see and so what is the truth of the matter are you kidding behind the debt with us at a meeting you can see the collaboration of what has been done probably prior to the meeting so that you know that it was something going on before the meeting for it to come out into the meeting I mean you have other people that I mean you have members of the board members helping 1 another to go along with what's going on I mean if you sit in there you can see it I mean that the audience may not be able to see it but we as board members sitting there we can see it and we can hear it I saw your head and then when we figure out how do you because this is this don't have there's a lot more than this and um as I'm listening and it hurts patient and I I misinformation is coming from because the issue that happened on Monday night of the board members to lie you know and for and it appeared and it appeared that there were those who knew this was coming up but didn't share and so when that happened you have no other recourse but to believe that it was planned Before Time you know so and then and with you know you actually um how did she see herself in this you know in in in we we we we close you know we talked and I have often said you know we get to know ourselves you know you you have to just Overlook something you can't always just be if the loud really you know forever and telling her that I said the same to others you know yourself better than anybody else I do not own self be true if you're doing something that you should not be doing own up to stop doing it and don't pretend that it's not happening there's some things are obvious it's obvious sitting down to do it I mean it's just obvious so what what do we what we need to change in order for you all to move from this low that you're in right now because it sounds like it was obviously in 2 different stories a lot of it is perception I I don't know what happened Monday night but uh I heard words like it appears or you know and and that's not solid that's not an actual fact know that somebody's belief so you can change the leaks you can't change that so do you need to change your beliefs because is it really what you think is going on or is it just a perception or an assumption that's being made because of the outcome of the situation I can never say definitely didn't happen I've been lying because I definitely know this as long as I'm going to wear a pair at that time and it started out in like had started out 1 way and when we first started I want why are we going on this policy you know and then why why did we why did I know about this why do I know about this you know and then in the end when specific name was called and so and we talked about being honest but if you're going to get somebody to bring in policy you got to remember I've broken policies also so if I'm going to send you this person I got to send you myself you know it's like I can see you I can handle you but me don't touch me and and and so we and the way that we solve that is that we have to be open for reconciliation we have to be open for and we have to be honest with ourselves yes this is what I want this is what we need and until we can get to that point and he said before until I can step out of myself and see myself and know that I not a part of the problem and I need to be part of the solution it's not going to happen but we have to be to we have to be true to ourselves you can't tell me I'm going to do this I'm going to do that when push come to the Shelf you do something else and so that's 1 solution I totally agree with that we do have to deal with what we're bringing to the table as a team as a board as a unit what else needs to change in order to get past this part this um 1-sided the it's always when the vote calls it's always for the that's that's been happening is it happening ever since I've done the school and it's been split it seemed like you can't come together or we won't come together for whatever reason but it's always split always I mean and so if you got a split forward maybe it's time to get a whole new boot what what's the impact of this um this fracture that's happened with y'all what's the impact on the work the decision the people who are being affected because we can't we can't focus on what supposed to be doing because on on what we are you know what here and um and I think too it's a fact that in order for you to believe that I'm doing the right thing I have to be on your team you know come to somebody else then it's a click it's a niche you can't be with persons and something others don't believe that you go along with everything this person said you know unfortunately I should be able to important and nobody think teaming up on each team up on something applying to something as we build Gerald anybody else but that I was thinking that it's a clip it's a group you know and so and until we get beyond that amen and was born want to be with me Mr um back at you believe that was bouldin and I are trying to do something uh we teaming up uh we discussing companies shouldn't be discussing you know and so you have to you have to have faith a a trust in your board members and if you feel that they are doing something go to that person talk to that person individually I mean that person if you come to me and I tell you what it is then and I just try to show you what it is they believe that's now if I tell you 1 thing I'm still doing the same thing then you know but give me that opportunity to give me that chance do you feel like y'all are open in your Communications with each other no no no 2018 it was obvious instances um when we got to the meeting please so why are you there it looks like a decision was made we went for quality and training entire year how to be a boy with the board evaluations which is always a time when you're sitting at your computer and you're giving your opinion and it is a train it's like today all the way back and for a while spent on the board and things to me and your meeting which I chose to go to because I wanted to know ISO persons personalities would be isolated and it's not just about the board from that person that I went to write and Branch I knew that there was a plan to make sure that that superintendent did back okay here we are and it's where we are right now based on those years have come into living here today if we don't get to a where the work that we're supposed to be doing is focused on and that's why I said that I live in a referendum people literally did not accept but there was a lot of work done for 3 years before the first and it didn't pass because of the behavior regarding what the community thought about the board but there were people who were not engaged in these who are hearing about what will happen to our district as a County if we didn't get that refund with all the growth coming in if you don't have what we need for the kids and kids and so 10 years from now we have works for all that's happening it would not have passed but nothing is passed you have another situation that's luminary that's it if I pour up the board vote but I vote for something for then there's something in the 5 books for became the reaction okay this is what happened last summer and I accepted that as reality I didn't talk about if you said this call me multiple times my name is in the paper but have a story that they want to tell and they will not use my name to tell period that's my position and I believe it as a board if you want to give cohesive and that should be 9 people with that same mentality 9 of us none of us should have our names in the newspaper with that it's truthfully said this so so this person the other person spoke to the newspaper because it doesn't matter what we think the minute they know that you're a board member and you say you're a board member you speak you have unofficially spoken on the actual entire board record policy I will not use it because newspaper for this use your name to divide and conquer how do I want to be seen in the public as as a as a unit Who as a unit that focus on student achievement focus on staff and and their security their job security folks on Administration we show that they're doing what they need to do to make the school run the way it should be right on our superintendent making sure that he has whatever he needs to make sure that everything they need him is run but now that's that's that's how I see us in but we can only do that if we all hold did their bios agree with that assessment but you know um I think that um no board is going to all go the same way you know and then I also feel that if you don't vote the way someone else feel that you should vote because sometimes people determine in their mind how you going to vote and if you don't vote the way that if you addition to hold that against you correct and that's going to tell you to have your say your voice in it and it doesn't have to but it doesn't always happen that way people get an attitude and I think that's a problem I know I know back always remember R comes before the okay respect and out of respect you know the trust and and I don't see the respect we should have to each other we're all here for the kids with just him we give up our life and and and things for the kids that go to County we we need to show each and every 1 of them you know respect and once you start respecting someone cuz a lot of times people learn that you can trust that person or they could trust you and we can build we got a big project I have a this morning I want to put 1 reference regarding another 1 twice the size you know it's a lot more at least know where they want this County to go so we can share it in 1 Direction the direction that the board basically that was the purpose of my question and asking what how you want to be seen in the public because that could be more importantly you in your own individual uh agenda right and I'm using agenda lightly I don't want to really say we're working thinking be better but it's not about you individually it is about you as intending on people because the people out there are depending on you right so they need the confidence that you have the best interest of the students in mind and that everything that y'all described that you want this board look like it's put for not in any inauthentic way it needs to be real and it's okay if you have differences of opinion on the background that needs to be accepted that you know by consensus I'm might not necessarily agree with how everybody else going but I can live with it because if that's in the best interest of what we're supposed to do then fine it doesn't always have to be my way that's the purpose for an actual vote right and so sometimes you'll win sometimes you might write yeah so you just have to think about the overarching goal of this board is to make sure we're doing we're honoring um go back to the mission what we're supposed to do remember the first thing we talked about was getting rid of your ego right it's not about your individual wishes this is about what the greater good and that's the only way you're going to get past that this is where we'll get to the point where you were just talking about some things you just going to have to accept it's it's it's you know don't take things personally um don't assume that just because there is um there there are a group of people a trio or a part of people that decided 1 way that they are talking and I hope y'all aren't doing it I hope you can articulate it I'm looking at y'all y'all are experienced people in a little your Seasons like me right we're all adults in this room nobody should be able to tell you how to think you know you should know here what your what you think is right and you vote from fear and I have it at vote Falls that's how that vote Falls right but you're supposed to stick with what matters to you in terms of and and it's got to make sense your decision needs defense in terms of the overall whatever it is we're trying to do so if if if you feel like whatever y'all do it all works well and the majority of groups there's no fine that's what we can already majority of the the group decided you had your say nobody prevented you from being able to have your voice in the room but the the majority was really exactly what the board yeah that yeah and so and then we move on to the next item on the agenda but taking it personal getting upset um you know making a lot of assumptions misunderstanding a lot of things seem disrespectful to 1 another all of that's going to keep y'all fractured it is not going to improve and the only person in here y'all can control is that's it that's it so you're banging your head against the wall that is not going to move and all you're going to do is lay yourself out to think that you're going to make anybody else do this all right and it's something that important says that I'm going but he said um trust and respect and I think in some way when I asked the question and I said and I um was had a thing and I trusted him that I respected enough to initiate a yeah you know you're always and and I think we all should always feel that we need to we need to be respected by everybody else on the board we trusted and only we can do that is to show ourself trustworthy so with that being said and what new behaviors need to occur that's a good segue to this what new behaviors need to occur in for what you show me to be believed what should we stop doing and what should we start doing in order to really trust we should stop sectioning off ourselves okay you know stop um um 76 years old where are you going um we need to walk what we talk you know and don't look for but don't look for the negative and somebody else and try to see some good in that person because in all of us that negative and sometimes they're more negative than than than positive you know um told somebody the other day sometimes to look at me being perfect because sometimes I'm so imperfect I take any spell perfect you know and so so we have to know that about ourselves each 1 of us and we have to respect that word we have to respect each other and look at the mail on this board and I try to carry myself to do respect me there's a few minutes and if I do something that you can't respect me when you disrespect me I asked myself what did I do to make that person act like this to me and and and you know and so I think we all need to have these questions with ourselves I appreciate that anything else that you would add to that because I do agree I'm trying to drop some of these down y'all need when we call team Norms new team staging it right now and there's a lot of uh pain and people holding on to some things remember 1 of the questions we have to ask is what should I let go of yeah so when you're holding on and stuff what does that do does that move you at any point know you can go get stuck right and so if there's enough of that going around around the entire voyage and stuff 1 person can leave all the different right so 1 person can change and flip this whole board to be the best board ever and 1 whole person can come in and totally rest the place at the same time all right so you have to that with 1 of those people you want to be do you think that if but her thing is all her possessions all and I'm going to be hard for us as a board with some as a board member to but it has to be somewhere we can get together and show this friendship this is not the way you think it is we are not who you think we are and how we going to do that I I don't know but I know it's something that we got 1 person in because they're not about you know that 1 person is out all of us out we can write know you don't have to be on 1 on 1 Accord so she got a mission I feel that it should be our mission what do you need in order to have trust resource what would you like to see I don't have to be like I said they would have to walk to Walk and not just talk it what does that mean though I mean the cynics like how do you want to walk what would you if you can name 1 thing that like to see that at least be the building block for trust to get back on the right but what would you like to see I guess I would like to see um me not being single out as being the corrupted person no how do you get single back I get single out because of like for instance the uh the what happened on Monday night I get singled out and Mr Mo I have not mean maybe 3 times yelling in my face like I'm the problem um and I just get single note since I since I came back on this board I don't know if it was a conversation or something had before I got on this board that she's here to get rid of the intended or she's here to do that I had no knowledge of any of that and since I started asking questions I understand then I start to get this angle out um even with this with intended that time and I don't do that cuz he wasn't into content um and accusing you know taking stuff out of the executive session even as far as placing it on um Saab news with my pictures saying that I took stuff out executive session and gave it to my daughter which did not happen so between with her and this building at the chair being a chair at that time this is what did me a single meal and I didn't think that was fair right for me so when things like this occur with this you know this concept that occurs what do y'all do after y'all interested do you do you address it or you try suggested I try to bring it to the chair so you can have a meeting or whatever to resolve the issue the superintendent does not get a referendum because of what she did to a board member or any of that the only person that represent is me okay so y'all do have time to come together to discuss all right not really it's at a board meeting like they did the other night they just brought brought it out the blue to want to censor me because I spoke to the news media when miss Ben has spoken to the news media but she was not the chair Miss Gerald has spoken to the news media when she's not the chair Mr um media I mean this is because I spoke to the news media and also nobody had brought to the table we have a policy about how to deal with so is anybody following the problem no so that's where you got to start too if you if you're not have things written everybody has to abide by that yeah but then they want to bring 1 person like I say me but not them let me just clarify what she said the newspaper that I made in the newspaper I have the audience not but it did say that they contact in the history but you read the rest of the sentence they didn't say I said because I when I was in the chair I didn't speak to him he never did and he came up in the morning and I didn't read the art to myself but when I got use my name for the Deep State he spoke to me so 1 of the things y'all just in general when you have these differences of what's going on there's got to be a conversation even if it's a facilitated conversation between both parties if you got to bring a third party and do so but you have to talk about it um maybe board meetings aren't the best time to do that it should be done because that's for business anymore all right so the personal stuff doesn't need to be brought up at the board meetings y'all need to have those at a separate time with a facilitator to hash out what's going on uh the intent should be to come in from resolution not just you can lay out here's what I see happen what I believe happened but at the end of it all um you got to figure out how you going to fix it because you'll continue to see what you're right now and it's just right now as a outside person all I see is finger pointing a lot of hard feelings but I don't see much in a weird resolution and what it's going to take is a change of behavior and mindset right I mean I I did it when you're ticked off and you feel um picked on um or you feel like the other person is not understanding things the way they really have fun or whatever all those things they get that gets very deep-seated and the only way you fix that is for you to change your mind about how how you're seeing everything that's it cuz it is what it is what happened happened but move movement and progress means I got to get past that some kind of way yes sir here um I tried to offer all this crazy and she told me no she don't want to have anything to do with me and she don't want to speak to me anymore uh just like that and so I'm not going out of my way we we see something she don't say nothing I don't say anything I don't I think that's a good relationship in school but when I tried the last time she says I don't want it I don't want your apology and this you know and so I went away and left it alone I can't make someone upset by acknowledging all right and from that and we had new communicated unless it's business on this board we don't even say hi  nothing to anyone and she's the only 1 on this board who that happens with everyone else speaks to me I speak to them and she got some problems to be all do so we all need to examine ourselves she's not perfect and I'll be the first to say that I'm not perfect but don't go important fingers when you got 4 Points back at you and that's saying he he did I I did not accept his apology because he's come at me 3 times he's a man and I'm a woman you don't come a man don't come point in his finger and jumping up in a woman's face especially if you on the board and you're supposed to be walking to and I will not accept this part of me not not for that time but um we have to navigate and not accepting and I'm going to bring this in if I'm if I'm out of order with this thing it's so big we all and fall short of the glory of God we all do over and over and over and over again when we got our masks and actually give us last name we want him to forgive us now once once us forgiveness and and and I get for giving you then I expect you to prove to me that you really repent you've done and you don't have no you don't want to do that again you know and so we have we have to know we have to know forgiveness is and we have to know how to forgive and how to accept forgiveness we can't hold on to her because well we call on to that hurt that anger we're not getting anywhere and that's all of us you know want to go America's cursed me cursed me I know that okay this is someone you have to kind of Sean you know for a while but they don't know that I've felt that way because I'm still talking you know not much I used to and I do so in order to be get an order to receive forgiveness and that can give forgiveness and until we as individuals know that and believe that believe that breathe that Where We Are and I'm going to hold y'all responsible to be mature adults I'm sorry you know it says we are talking about this and I'm not pinpointing anyone I can remember when Mr more that um re-elected to the board a couple years ago well I called a couple of people I never got around to call him to say congratulations Mr muy called me and I still have it on my voice still today clearly cursed me out it told me never speaking again but you know what I ignore that you know when I tried to be the person I'm supposed to either everyone had I hold that against him you know me and we have some blow up we have had some blow up and I need a Me Line in this room but I tried to move past those things and work like I'm supposed to but what you do for 1 just do for the other and that's why I always examine my try examine myself so it starts from where we talk we begin with right um looking at our applications y'all got a lot going on and it's gonna take a minute how many anybody rolling off anytime soon still but I'm gonna go with David you talked about offering again this but repentance mean that so if I have a behavior that I keep doing then I need to stop doing that behavior if I'm sincere about changing Grace is another 1 so if my behavior here I need to change I also need you to give me the grace to make that change happen because it's a part of how I behave and I have to break myself from my habit and that doesn't happen overnight it says every single person here is flawed we've all seen them and nobody in here has really the space to be judgmental about another individual and to withhold forgiveness and Grace give it up to me the things I do not deserve giving unto me the things I do not deserve it maybe what you've done don't deserve forgiveness but that Grace mercy not I'm not giving you the things that I do deserve we have we have to know it anyway I'm Finnish Church like I know wouldn't say icon is we going through all this today and come Monday we regret that I'm asking y'all what what needs to what's 1 thing you can do differently that's why I I wrote down 3 things that came up uh 1 of them was to stop being fractured go ahead so I think as we talk here I can't do this 1 um 1 of the stuff that conspiracy thinking cuz you just have to stop in terms of what I think some people think of me is not true conspiracy thinking has to stop so just going to get everybody to me me um we've gotten stuff we're going through here on the interpersonal stuff some of it is um violation of policy but um that interpersonal stuff but the big Focus we have to do is the learning of children and the Senate personal stuff in the conspiracy theory is nothing but that the methyl to was showing the community that we can actually work together for children follow the step and then you said so do we need to reduce the policy around certain what we kind of are we are slowly working our way through so part of it is and I think you alluded to a support um just because prior because addressing someone who violated policy starts with the chair and if the chair in the past has not addressed it they kind of have to go okay they didn't address it wasn't dealt with but at some point you have to stop and so it was ever the chair has to say I don't care if other people have my job is to address this is the current this is the present I can address the first absolutely otherwise it goes pastors and and everybody needs to abide by the policy that's why it's written so I would highly encourage to go back and do whatever that is um that keeps cropping up and everybody got to follow it and there has to be um some accountability there out of how will we hold each other accountable to abide by whatever policy you have in place for certain conduct when is that my wife nothing if you're following me you have the room that you can do that yeah so even as leaders in here everybody the leader has to start it and make sure everybody else is abiding by it it is not there just to be I mean you know that's how you build trust yeah and there's no preferential treatment in that regard so and you hold yourself accountable so that if you do have to call out a co-worker a a colleague about it then you won't get yourself as well I'm going to go back know what you have to decide how are you going to operate going forward that might not be a part of policy but are we going to be open and talk to each other are we going to hold these grudges or you know or we don't learn how to give forgive except is it's been great and personal right there needs to be some change in how things are going to go going forward that's why I asked you what 1 thing you can't do 10 things at once and it's hard to break some of this but what's the most important thing you think you all should be doing in terms of pressing forward past this point what 1 Thing do you need to make so I don't mind you guys just a few minutes I'd like to get from each 1 of you individually what are you going to do differently upon leaving here that will make this board better and this is not what other people going to you are going to so who wants to tell team anything on a personal level you want to do differently so we've been talking about myself this morning I love the student achievement be there that that needs to be a given but what 1 thing you personally well just I think encouraging the board care to be the leader to follow our policy yeah so you want to support the board chair and making sure the policies get okay all right who else I I I and we have to follow what we were elected to do what is the role of the department not micromanaging is not a part of being a board member is what the Lord individually that's brotherly but with a boy who said walk away with that and I think you know that self assessment to me because I look up my own here and everybody is at the table being into except 1 you know that is present number 1 so that you cannot sit at the table with us to discuss and have a dialogue as how that's a lot if I can I don't think I need to get answered my she asked me how often so I gave her 1 thing you're going to do 1 thing I was and that was I'm following what it is to be a boy what it is to be in those things I identify and then my question is I would like to get to you but it's obvious that there is 1 person gotcha I believe a city number 1 because that person shows you see so that's aunts okay and then I saw you on the meeting on time I have a bad problem of of not listening if I got my what you said and I tell people all the time who does a me battle back and forth as soon as that broke down or to meet no pay your best players they just I'm just I tell people I'm just doing what I think is bad you know convince the other 1 you know and a you know and try to if I want to you know my thing is I don't that people know all the information are on what I'm trying to get and affecting the so what I think rather than informing them so they can make an informed decision I appreciate that thank you for so those are the 3 important things that you're going to do be on time listen to people and then uh share more information all right good who else I'm going to try to not think of me as being the 1 who has to solve or be The Peacemaker but listen to others and try to feel that they're saying whether I believe us that are not and understanding that just like I give my opinion their right to get their opinion and not be so quick to think even though they even they look up don't be so quick to judge and say it's plotting its plain that's what I'm going to try my best to do and hope that you know 1 thing too that they don't want to uh Desmond Tutu said um you know in in time of conflict he says don't raise your voice change your argument so if you don't agree yelling at me ain't gonna make it better you just have that I heard you you just didn't sell me on it so we might have to get better at you know trying to sell our position on something and be respectful that everybody's not going to agree with it so I want you on that all right we got like 5 people left I believe in power in both policy and I think for me there's an important issue um and I think that when you when you do the policy it is not for me it's for everyone and I believe in that and that's 1 of that I will focus on you know to make sure that policy will follow the right way and that I myself and how I communicate brain is knowing the facts and activity and being transparent you would like a stitching because they're the 1 that's bigger than me um and the other thing I want to have to go on with this gold and said about me not being at the table and she knows uh she's a problem to because she made of something my daughter did personally to her and I had nothing to do with and I tried to apologize to her for that and she didn't accept it either so I can't deal with that so I will come to the meeting and I will be myself it feels very non-committal be yourself just let me could it be as simple as I'm going to be a part of the team know even if even in your position your physical proximity to everybody else you are sitting over there away from the rest of the team so that clearly that well my my attention was not to come to this workshop at all okay I decided the last minute maybe 8:00 this morning that decided that I was going to come and and um I say when I can I was going to sit by myself do you think that's um improving the situation or adding to its probably adding to it yeah so but that's just how I am I I need to be a part because they have they have made me a a part from it so I need to be a part something we need to have invalid disabled like I ain't part of this and I think I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm gonna be attorneys so that's why okay all right got you they can speak to you my perspective is very different of this board that I think of themselves uh personally because I have met with each 1 personally it was personal to me to know something personal about each person is kind of the teacher in me the pastor in uh and I see this more very differently often when I'm asked by States who intended or others have things going on the board and I'll tell them you know they treat me really well and well that's just the truth but the inter or intra side of the board is their issues um I I don't have the issues with with this person that that that appears because I deal with every person individual although I know they function as a board I deal with them all individually I know something personal about them all and that's just my leadership I want to know how I can there are 9 of them but if 1's got a problem I want to know how I can help solve that problem because I think that's important to the functionality of the entire board uh so often when I asked uh I walked by the governor and he asked me who I was the other day and I said Sam white you know from Jasmine and he simply looks at me and said y'all got a lot going on that day don't you I said we absolutely do and I just left you know I'm not going to give you any more than you need to know uh you know had he asked me how Michael actually the board is I also just what I'm saying to you I have I had personal issues at but I'm a bit like what I heard a few people talk about with the Forgiveness side 1 of the things in my personal life y'all never who I am spiritually um pray to the good fellow stairs that I could be like him which is even when something bothers me I have the ability to just let it go because if I let that hang on to me it's going to create it's going to Slow Me Down and I don't need to have an issue with the individual person uh or I don't and and and I don't know if this is an issue of the board but none of them have ever tried to swing to 1 person or the other uh no no no share this way because at the end of the day I've been hired by 9 people to do a job not to pick sides and ultimately have if I was the point of being where they are and sit on the board where I live I would hope that although they're 9 of us I understand the concept of consensus that it may not be what what I want but if it's for the good of the body then I'm okay with it and so and last thing I will be quiet I set whatever the last 1 reason and I'm the preacher I got I got I got you know I got the complete my foot was left so but every last 1 of these people have showed me personally that they love this place and to me that's what I wish they could all see that I personally see every last 1 of but 8 of the 9 are here have a passion of love and that's what keeps me loved because they love ya the challenge is using that love to bridge your personal issues because there are things that are just bigger than how you feel about going up you know I have a pastor of a church a pastor all the people I don't like them all but I gotta love them all and so I think that for me and I'm glad you could open this door because I want to say this for a long time but can you open it up and I will send the lawyer around with you and that's if I could show you my notes that I took in meeting with every last 1 of you the the you know in in doctoral work you know you've got to see the light lights and the differences and the lights among you individually is so simple that if so very simple it's the the few differences you're letting dominate what is causing the friction board meetings outside of what happens a lot of time in executive session and then what happened last week have been pretty consistently even in terms of getting back to the point of teaching and learning good uh some of the other stuff that happens you know but but you know what you know what you're a church management if I talk to with that and talk to the inside I'm always looking for common ground because they are generally in more agreement than they are disagreement it's a little thing that caused the big 1 but overall the intent is still the same you know the the the things that they're because I've been here I have that concept and because people with my thing it's it's easier for me you know I had this been someone else I don't know if that would be the same and so ultimately I think that for this board and I'm not giving advice I'm just telling you I'm talking about you know you are you have a lot more likenesses than your different people and I think if you focus on that yeah yeah you're going to see better results from that so that now okay governor and he said y'all got a lot going on he like yeah we got hit on all cylinders we're a tight group we are making this happen we're making that happen that's what will happen with your yeah you hi folks in the very productive and the benefit company people so the little things are the things that are taken care of at the end of the day like running a build and running a school I can't focus on 1 or 2 problems I got to keep the main thing the main thing even in this District I don't focus on the problems I don't really agree much articles unless they're sent to you because I don't want anybody to change my view of the people I serve I I serve this group I'm sorry I'm at my last respect y'all's time so I'm at the we didn't get to the third thing I want to do for me I told myself 2 years ago I wasn't really sure that I was touching anything that go out each person the decision made that's funny like to have you know the quarter of the jigsaw part of the other and so the whole thing is to get the open and so I had already planned to create release so that everybody feels and I also know that being in on the 10th period and I've always included to be any attention I need to understand that everyone does or get into the weeds like I do the details to find answers to details and let my friend make sure you tend to overshare facts and so I'm going to work on not oversharing fact select and this and that you want to use people yeah that's what we were supposed to get into exactly 1 of those people and the first time I did that training it was part of my passion I understand that a team is made up of individuals but it takes everyone for the team to become a team okay so I will talk to you I will say good morning to and if you refuse to speak to me I don't care the next time I see you I'm going to say good morning I'm going to ask about you and I'm going to confident if I look to me like a foxes after the hand that's up to you yeah I don't think I can who's that part of me because I don't want to go down that road and then if you go down that road to where it sits and flights and takes just questions feel free to stop me this is supposed to be interactive because you know I can talk all day long but so don't make me talk to himself commentary procedure basically how do we run our meeting right um if we didn't have it there would be no order and don't pay off other than climb I see in my hand and so we have an agenda to guide us but around the agenda um we we need some Rules of Order In order to make make sure that our meetings run efficiently and effectively so of course the latest edition of Roberts rules of orders will govern do y'all have that okay good I have it in the back just in case I need to refer to it um if there are some questions that I need to look up quick fast but for the most part it's all in my head and your policy be basically says that the latest it doesn't have to be this why is it important Robert of the order should run hand in hand with a foyer of course because these the presentation not the complete presentation but I don't want to give you all the answers to them but the scenario that we have is in your phone um operating in the sunshine what is the access conduct business in an open and public manner but also in an organized and orderly manner why the world is watching y'all know this right here all day every day I some of my colleagues literally say that they tune in to board meetings to be entertained and so just just realize that at this day and age everyone is watching we don't want to entertain them so what are our meeting goals we want to make sure that our meeting is structured we want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to speak business is discussed and not people we know what we what I mean when we say that right I disagree or I don't agree with that motion not I hate what Dwayne just said oh he's gonna be my guinea pig so um reduce or eliminate comp eliminate conflict as much as possible are we always going to argue no it we are people we are we all um believe in different things and we'll vote in different ways but we can still do that in an orderly fashion votes are conducted properly well unanimous well you know and according to the picture everybody's not raising their hands it's not in it so we want to make sure that we conduct our motions properly and board members are engaged um kudos to you all I see on your uh board meeting policy that you end up meetings at 9:00 p.m. unless the board meeting needs to go longer but because what happens when it gets late and we're having long board meetings what your brain cells go to sleep the attitude makes up that's what happens with me and so it's good to say hey let's conduct this meeting let's do it let's get in let's get out and in whatever we need to carry on to the next meeting if if necessary but I looked at your agenda so your agenda look like cuz I have an example for you um that you you uh get in and you handle the business of the board and you affected me of course you have to have a form we all know that uh leadership we have elected a chair we have for you you have to carry motion because it's not important necessarily what we say the record reflects what actions you take so we need to make sure that we are conducting those Muslims properly and of course you have to take minutes and approving at the following day all right so the district is monitoring a hurricane that is heading South Carolina only the truly Brave and determined will be at the border meetings scheduled during the danger window who may cancel the meeting thank you for watching very good very good and this is not in Robert Woods so but I looked at your policy and it it um clarifies who maintains the vehicle um by majority vote of the board at a dually call board meeting so if you know the next month something is happening um by declaration by the board chair or the chairs are available the vice chair consultant and Consulting with the superintendent when a significant event beyond the board's control ringers attended that meeting unsafe or unreasonable or when a form of course cannot be reached so if everybody's going on vacation then we know we may as well not just come to say well we showed up but we can't have to give just go ahead and cancel the meeting or res schedule the chair has been called away for work and cannot attend the meeting the vice chairs will wait vacation to the Secretary of the board put on the full armor and preparation to resign over the board meeting or can the chair designate someone to stand in any any any guesses the secretary so according to your policy the chair may not appoint someone to stand Abraham Robert rule says that the chair cannot cannot pick who um you like and the absence of the chair and vice chair the secretary will act as the presiding officer this is from your policy and the absence of the chair Vice chair and secretary the board will elect a temporary chair to preside over the meeting so in that case if the all 3 board members are are missing then someone opens the meeting and then a chair is elected um any questions there does somebody have to be the Super with somebody completely on the board it could be the superintendent because really it's just they call a call the meeting to order and then say okay at the pleasure of the board let's elect um or it could be a member of the of the board um Robert's Rule specifically says it could be anyone it could be somebody on the any member of the board or someone to open up the meeting um yes so is that something that we should know in advance even just in case I should happen so they should come to the meeting and leave the officers are there instead of us looking around to see who's going to do it because we just say we go to designate ahead of time so that you could yeah so so we know you could if that happens then I know the board chair is going to let the superintendent know what my chair and um but you know just in case nobody told the second Secretary of the board right um then yes you can go ahead and say okay superintendent just that just makes it easier go ahead and open the meeting and then the rest of the remaining board members willing to check sounds good to me and yeah yeah yeah great question um and then of course let's get into this agenda your board agenda it basically spells out who is responsible for chair and superintendent it determines who can suggest items to be added anybody basically what is the deadline I think it's 10 days before the meeting determines what is timely for discussion for chair superintendent and must be posted of course by the deadline at 24 our window and then must be approved at the minute all right um let's see uh huh okay I know okay I have thinking about creating a generic setting committee okay which would include the 3 options okay any other all of those 4 people okay to create items that you would like to see on the agenda uh I'm going to let y'all asked questions about the problem with that is they have the privilege to think that you know we know that more 2 and the superintendent don't know okay um and I think before you can organize the committee it has come before the board to the board to approve that chair just can't do that of course correct so so I think that that's so that's always the fear of committing and that is why I believe in your community policy is that the job will not have standing communities other than those that are appointed by the board so the fear is always that you know some board members will be permitted information that others that everybody is not so then if that is the fear you need to discuss how to prevent that as much as possible how but that is a discussion that the board will have to have and vote on Dwayne at wants the pipe in here you know generally if you are establishing a committee a committee has to have agenda oh now y'all do know that you gonna get to that so I hope you do know that the committee would have to me have the have the notice the meeting but anyway and notice the meeting um have the Quorum all that day exactly like the full board so you have to take that into consideration about when the committee will be meeting so when you and if you going have this as a standing committee you're going to need to adjust that policy to reflect and so you going to have to take the necessary steps in order to do that to go that route if you would like to do something because it's agenda setting um since each board member has the option or opportunity to relate to the board chair on superintendent would they like to see on the agenda I'm trying to figure out that board said agenda said including what would be their assumption that would be questions that y'all would have to discuss when this item comes up oh okay so the same way that a policy committee was formed the same way the referendum created and people there's a different different set because everybody has the option of presenting you have questions or concerns for the agenda to view and submit so it's like double it's like a double it's like a double thing here because you have your you have this agenda setting committee you said what agenda when when everything's an agenda should be between you and and so why do we need an agent and like you said that come before the board it has to come before the board for that type of discussion and then you need to determine what the role of the committee will be so when you have the this discussion that will be set forth in that discussion exactly what the parameters for this committee will be and how they will report out basically to the board chair and superintendent so again you all have to work on that and have this discussion at that time um but taking a consideration you will have to notice everything that committee will have to be under the same obligations as question well another question okay just a comment or whatever because what we were discussing is um it was just given to board members in an email that this is what's going to happen that they are going to be the the chair and the officers are going to get together and discuss the agenda with us to pretending it never came before the board for the board to make visit go to that step and this has been done since uh Mrs Gerald became a chair so it's like the other board members were left out were more than an email coming to okay this is what actually and they use that email when you ask for any other items Act act no we're not saying that you know we get an opportunity to act I'm just saying that when you perform this committee you just give a direction that this is how it's going to be that the board officers now will be this um committee to um to um make up the agenda well it sounds like we need to put this on the agenda an upcoming agenda for the war to discuss and make a decision now that we know that this is that it needs to be a discussion and an action item of the movement how about let's just put it on a future agenda okay does does that help so y'all can have this discussion and and and actually vote on okay so not on the agenda so if everything must be posted at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting can be amended up until the 24-hour deadline so say your board meeting is on Monday and you post on Friday technically you have until Sunday if your staff is available to to make any changes but you have to re notice it like you did the original poster at the meeting it can be at the meeting it can be amended with the 23rd vote to add discussion items and then it can be a amended with a 2:30 and a finding of an emergency or accident circumstance for final Act and of course we need to proceed with caution regarding that any questions there so pertaining to posting um when you're uh posting 24-hour notice they're physically have to be posted on the building or is on uh on the district's website for addition I leave the statue still says physically on the building um they haven't really revised that at this point but yes it is um because initially there was no virtual poster and so the bill and I don't think they took so again it's physically still on the the building last button go ahead thank you very much to add discussion items the months that was happening almost every 4 days and maybe the beginning of May was it passed about 2:30 oh it never passed oh okay I was about to say what did you talk about it anyway so yeah um and and it's been okay okay so then the the question should be is everybody aware of the 10-day I don't know okay I don't think I have an answer to that because if somebody made the motion to add something you have to consider the motion and so if if it's the will of the board to be added it's going to be added it's a perception of if I went outside of but January someone to present which um the perception from someone like calling them or a sax team or an assist what's going to happen in this District so I will say this is it that that you only meet once a month you are going back to dinner okay and so that of the month right so it may be that this is to come up and we need to talk about it or I feel that we need to talk about it um but again I don't have an answer to the why but I can tell you that if someone made an emotion it needs to be addressed yes I I guess that sometimes is that you are requesting something to be on the agenda within that 10 here now we can get to it's not on the agenda so that is when someone was probably trying to amend the agenda because something they requested but then the 10 day if you never gets on the agenda you mean outside of the tent in here okay um Fair Point Fair Point so that remember when the board chair and superintendent and does that person feel like it's kind of the person that wanting it on the yeah yeah okay so fair point again they they every board member has activate that home um if if there is a an emergency 1 you have to and this is the steps to declare an emergency is it emergency you go to determine if an emergency exists a majority of set 2 will it be added to the agenda that's a the 2/3 though and then you actually have to consider the item some folks think once make that 230 votes as of the the the agenda that is the the termination of the item so you remember you still have to consider it but and remember that bar for the Emergency is very high so just to call me um a hurricane needs to be a company or something like that can the board at a different station for the purpose of taking the same thing is it an emergency uh can board at an item for discussion to the agenda by 2 girls right can the board move items around on the agenda and so here's my very lawyer like oh answer I guess I didn't do it on here um it depends so if you are moving an item because somebody's running late and you just need to wait until that person gets there no problem if you're moving an item because um the kids are here our presentation we want to go ahead and get them out the way fine but if you moving an item that's at the end of the agenda to close the elementary school and you realize that people not here at the beginning let's go ahead and move it up there because now you are doing it to prevent that public action so again my Lord answered would be it depends but the right reasons for wrong reasons so executive session I think everybody should be familiar with this right no private executive session the board must State the specific reason was the only phone in 1 of the following Personnel student matters legal matters related to a pending threat to claim settlement of a claim on position of the district and an adversary situation contract negotiations security and safety measures those will always get your your security plans with the cameras are in the schools things like that and always get you an executive session and investigative see things related to any questions all right so I pulled 1 of your path agendas this is the 1 from uh November and so for another reason we going to work with this agenda and a number of ways we are going to run a motion right because this is what we need to do so this is the task of the Jasper County School Board motion process for the next 5 minutes they will conduct the test that initially passed the emotions this is only a test all right and so the 1 on here that I said we needed to do the part was the second reading of the new cell phone policy exhibit for I know we all have to pass that for by state because they had to go into implementation um for January so Madam chair next item is with that d d d it's just in your phone the the agenda uh no no like the whole agenda I I gave you a hard copy of it just so you can see here we go deep second reading of the new cell phone mhm yes let's carry this motion so go ahead chairs introduces item second reading of the new cell phone what happens next all right so uh Dr Wag has read the new cell phone policy what happens next motion 2 yes that's right I like to make a motion that um we approve the second reading of the new your cell phone policy uh exhibit for is presented by Dr W M discussion support no discussion no correct okay all right and continue ah so you go you do a roll call nice okay so this purpose is just do all in favor yeah all in favor say I I oppose their always have to have 1 okay so the most important because everyone else said I and we do have a New York all right okay it was great y'all got an egg Okay so the step 1 for uh carrying a motion for me my board member make a motion another member seconds the motion the chair says the question um members debate emotion the chair puts the question to the vote and the chair announces the result of the vote and why I always um reiterate this is because some folks start discussion before there is motion on the floor and so you always want to make sure based off of if the um superintendent or Administration is making a recommendation move and and a board member will make a motion move whatever way up or down and then you carry on with the discussion and so um a plus plus I will not run through this um example because y'all got but it is you know or I will I will email this to well basically I ran through a motion um and to the next point anybody have any questions about carrying them okay next 1 can a motion that failed be brought up as a brand new motion at a later minute but anytime we brought up as a brand new motion at a later meeting yes absolutely that had the majority of that and later at a later session any motion that is still applicable can be renewed by anyone when is it somebody on the prevailing side in the same day main meeting when you're trying to do a motion to reconsider and we're going to get into that board member indecisive went to bed regretting his vote to build a new Elementary School oh let me go back to the previous what needs to happen for that motion to come up again at a later board meeting so we just can't randomly make motion really it has to be on the agenda in order to bring it up again uh board member and decisive went to Bear regretting his vote to build the new elementary schools he called the board of medicine to can he do that no why not a member has a right to change his or her vote until the time the result is a Max after that the change can be made only by unanimous consent of the board without debate immediately after the announcement of so the the board can consent to let that individual changes go explain immediately after immediately after the announcement of the the result so before we move on to the next okay so we can't change our mind that's why you do not vote for this you can't come back after that you want the motion you made again for the person to cancel did you move on to the next I can talk about so before you move on so after we move on to the next item it's too late correct in an effort to be Echo friendly the boy will now handle all correspondence electronically the board acted to purchase laptops for each member at the next meeting before the laptops could be purchased board member hooked on paper makes the emotions of reconsider the previous decision of the board he did not vote in the affirmative for the original motion is this appropriate now we going to pretend it's on the agenda okay on the all the it's not appropriate only because it's not it's at the next board meeting what should it be a motion to resend the previous position and I I'm going to break it down a little bit so after oh oh okay so at the next board meeting after receiving the laptop board member hooked on paper makes a motion to resend the previous decision of the board he did not vote no permanent for the original motion is this it doesn't matter right because anybody can make a motion to resend then it's on the agenda what's the issue here it's Catholic it already it's the say that it already happened he has the laptop and once the money has already been paid you have the laptop it is too late so that is why the difference is has the action over is the building already up and we already built the building then it's too late to resend right um it's that type of thing so the when you considering these 2 most of the reconsider may only occur at the same meeting in which the action took place only someone prevailing side can make the motion to reconsider it must be seconded and debatable if the original action was the debatable and cannot be amended emotionally resend again on the agenda no time limit anyone can make that motion regardless of how he or she voted must be seconded a debatable and can be amended and I didn't once the action from the original vote has been done it is Tuesday any questions there okay the matter for discussion is a purchase of laptop I love I love buying technology test um is a person laptop device is for students the question is raised as to whether funding can be used for this purpose the CFO or chief whatever you Director of Finance has to do some research before answering that question and will bring the information back to the board at a later meeting should the matter be tabled until that meeting know so no emotion to the table is only for something at that you going to bring back up at the same meeting if it's something that's going to you need to reschedule so basically for later meeting what should it be a motion to postpone right uh most of the only used to interrupt the pending business to something else that we discussed immediately so again if you had started an item that second reading for the cell phone policy and then you said oh can we go ahead and let these kids come on and do their presentation I I'm all I move that we table this until after the kids have finished um presenting and then once it's over you pick it right back up um this violates again why because it's not available just violate the right of minority or individuals and that such would be out of order question to ask if the intent to kill or avoid dealing with a measure if so emotions delay on the table is not um emotions are postponed to a or a motion to postpone indefinitely Or the proper motion when you take it up from the table the matter is picked up exactly where it was when it was suspended so wherever you were and handling that second reading of the cell phone policy whether it was somebody just made a motion we need a second wherever you were you pick it right back up you cannot interrupt the speaker requires a second is not available not amendable requires a majority cannot be amended and then a time limit that is for that meeting right if you carried over the meeting like say to the next day again the carryover that same agenda to a a a second meeting it would be okay for that second thing but that normally does not happen so it only is for that live any questions just for clarification is my first meeting different where it says uh you cannot manage it or be paying it's really the motion to bring it back off the tape that's that's the motion and then you go back into whatever the businesses and that can be a benefit right the original motion can always be a mental it is the motion to take it out from the table that you're saying hey we we we table this we need to bring it back up yes yes good question any other question if if best to do that so we know when to bring it if you don't it automatically comes back up at right after that event so say you were waiting on somebody to get the like say the CFO said oh I can run to my office and come back then you can say I motioned the table until the CFO gets back and then somebody but if you are just tabling it for the kids presentation then go ahead and say that because it's going to come out right back right now and you're just taking you're just taking for that same year yes good question good question and um all right to amend an island emotions to the men modified commandment requires and subject to debate and is amendable a main motion and Olivia made it twice with a primary Amendment Amendment and a secondary Amendment amendments are limited to the current motion before the board and must be specific to that motion so again if I'm buying I'm making a motion to buy a laptop somebody said oh I want to amend that motion to be Dell laptops that's a but if somebody says uh no I would like to um okay let me move on to the next 1 somebody then said oh well no I want to buy debt I want to in it again to buy desktops that's not appropriate because right now the amendment on the floor is Dell laptops does that make sense so you just need to vote down that motion if we want to buy desktops instead if somebody makes a The Binding desktop does that make sense okay so the question so say you want primary Amendment okay the secondary Amendment passes mhm um you go back down to the primary as amended okay and then you go back to the motion as amended the the primary pass if the primary passage then both the secondary and primary will be tacked on to the original then if if they change original then that would be the original motion and then you have to vote on the original motion as amended as amended right but you're right you start at the bottom you amend you amend and then you handle the Amendments going back down does that make sense so if it was um again I move that we buy laptops and then the primary um motion was I move I want to amend to say sell laptops and then somebody said I want to amend that further to be read Dell laptops did the Red Pass yes so then the the primary is Red Dead and then if that passes now you're buying the original motion is I move that we buy red Dell laptops so you take each 1 up and then you bring it back down and if either 1 of those fails if the random fail why why why would we buy red in the f****** so that did not pass so you throw that away so the primary is then dead does that pass and then if it does then we're moving to buy Dell laptops in the process of all the uh solution okay let us find out right now so it doesn't the the dell and the red line pocket it does each level has to get that debate and who and if either 1 Fales then you just handle the rest of the mindset okay so the only 1 that passed get tacked onto the original but all 3 levels required that's right that's right the name gets voted it has to and then we amend the main motion no no no so I move because remember the the item on the agenda let me let me take it back to that second reading okay the eye holes and we pass this second reading for the cell phone policy right that is on the table we're debating right then somebody says no you know what we need to clarify because this cell phone policy is going to take us until January so then somebody says I amend this motion to say cell phone policy effective January 2025 and then while y'all talking about that say yeah that's what the law says we should do that we should add that clear because it's November if we vote on it now people are going to wonder and does it take effect now or does it take effect later so we want to clarify in that original motion so y'all talking about that then somebody says well let's make it clear even more players say when the students come back in January 2025 so when y'all somebody move know let's add that additional Clause of when the students come back and then y'all was debating it and so I says well no that's not important January January 2025 is clear enough we don't need that additional Clause of when the students come back so that gets voted down so now we're voting on should we add effective January 2025 everybody says yes that clarification is necessary dashboarded up so now the original motion will be to approve the second reading of the cell phone policy effective January 2025 that is right right was it as you go back I I I don't think I heard it I said we're going bye bye yes and then if somebody misses it again yes I still think I need to understand that that name we're going to vote no we're not voting on them this is this is before discussion this is during discussion is when somebody will move to a man and then we vote on that yes okay and then after that first amendment fails or passed somebody else says oh I want to amend it no no every amendment is done during the date so you're not taking the final vote but but it's only 2 amendments 2 minutes and they must be they must be um Germaine to the 1 so let me if you if you take that final goal you're just doing a new motion right so if once that vote has been taken you're not you done so now somebody has to say oh y'all we forgot to add effective 2025 somebody has to make a new so it's easier to do it in an amendment before you take the vote does that make sense all right being a great question if I want to make sure y'all y'all understand the amendment process is probably going to be difficult um we try to contact uh and so you really have to take notes on what people are trying to add and clarify and and things like that so that we make sure that we get the Amendments right so it's a couple of times that I've had to tell folks y'all only voted on because they'll vote on the amendment and then move forward and no no the amendment so yes you always have to come back down the steps and right here with a minute all right during discussion of buck delay that is appropriately outlined on the agenda a board member began to go off topic to discuss the number of accidents at the elementary school because the traffic light has not been resolved what should board member don't want to hear it due to address from the appropriate it does not include hashing up so that's not the words that we need to be using point of order point of order that's always the commentary this needs to be corrected um and password so when a board member believes the rules of the order policy or the law is being violated he should he or she should raise a point of order it automatically triggers action by the board I mean sorry by the chair to rule on right um it takes precedence on whatever you were doing because whatever we were doing somebody is saying is a violation of some sort so does not require a second nobody has to agree with or or second it the second doesn't necessarily mean agreement it's not debatable but the chair can ask the individual to explain why the point of war is being raised so what what who what law what procedure do you feel was being bonded um and then of course the chair can consolidate Paul Mighty it's not amendable if the chair rules then the matter can be appealed to the global um and by a motion and a second must be done so once that point of order um has been ruled on by the table it's 2 days later it's not okay to say oh I want to appeal that we need to do it timely right right after that everybody good with that all right and and folks please don't if you feel like something is out of order whenever that is the easiest way to to address an issue that you feel like is is um is in violation of a removal policy only now everyone is looking at their watch and ready to depart from each other's presence it's a motion required to adjourn very loyally it depends so in the time is on the agenda that you approved you automatically say 9:00 if it you know then we it's time to adjourn if it's not like today you have after this at 9:30 2:30 11:30 2:30 you going into executive session and then your journey so you would need to do a motion to adjourn but you can also handle it by what without objection this meeting is a journey there's nothing else on here so um any questions there same with a reset can you have a recess automatically scheduled with a time then you can say as the agenda indicates now is the time for a recess we will therefore take this risk but if it's time you need to say can I get a motion to reset because that's the next time or this early does that make sense all right a whole lot any question say before we get into the other meat and potatoes this stuff great question get into action anything I missed that y'all feel like needs to be addressed regarding at you know efficiently run no I was going to let everybody take a quick 5 if you need to so I guess that's not only the agenda because okay unless I want to roll on because I can't okay okay 5 minutes right and these I try to combine into different topics but the the main um 1 that boards actually deal with higher so we're going to start there the board has determined that it should be more involved in the hiring process and directed that 1 member should serve on every interview panel to make sure that the right candidates are being selected what are the legal implications and so this take very different forms right um some boards will say oh I want you know we really like this candidate you should pick this candidate some boards will say no um we want to um be provided all the information um as far as the interview notes and good and it goes on so this looks different but I came up with this scenario but I'm trying to address the issue of remembering what the board's role what's the legal implication when the board says pick this person in any form well what what what are we dealing with cuz what does that do to the administration micromanagement oh that individual who should be held accountable for that individual right when you tell him who then who becomes a representative so say you know we said oh put this this let this award-winning coach you know teach that science like right cuz we want him to be able to coach and so then when the students are not learning in that class or you know something else happens when you have to discipline that person who's going to be held accountable 1 and then can you really hear it because how can you be a neutral body make a Judicial decision regarding that individual and you were the 1 who put him in like how many employees do you do you direct 1 1 and you are supposed to hold that 1 so if something does as far as hiring goes that is the person that you say you put that person in that position and you handle that through the evaluation process so your boy policy uh BBV the global selector competent established educational leader at superintendent and support that person in discharge of assigned duties the boarding his memory will deal with administrative Services through the superintendent and will not give orders that need of the superintendent the publicly on progress but may make suggestions and recommendations to the superintendent the board serves in the Quasar judicial function when actual appeals of parents do Guardians 2 presumptuous on decision a but superintendent or or her all right everybody good there all right any other questions regarding higher all right let's talk about Lord engagement Mr CDL Rose veteran M driver for the Disney called board member Problem Solver to report the little Johnny you all know what little if this rock is 1 of us Mr Rose knows that parents and has tried to get them to a yes Little John's Behavior Mr Rose does not want to report Little John because of close family time there's a small community you know how that right board member of Problem Solver decides to handle the matter himself and meets Mr rows as author of the negative supervisor the bus driver Give Love guys Behavior makes a recommendation for discipline to the person so many things wrong all right so many times all right but let's start with the phone call to the board member and what board member should have said call us over 10 or if because if 1 you you need to let the principles of right that principle or and or superintendent or yes I think so yeah report this to you stop not reporting to me because if this child is a problem you need to appropriately discipline this test um and then that's so that was the first issue what we should have directly to the to proper Source or board members should have what call himself and say hey situation then board member said but I'm I'm just going to go and see about I'm going to get on the bus yeah in the morning Transportation director before you shouldn't even listen to the to the report on what the issue is so yeah but sometimes it's hard to start people when they want to let you know so my my rule of thumb is whenever there's a break or a pause in the conversation say hey before you go any further let me tell you go ahead and direct us to the the the person that that that needs to know because if I hear this now I won't be able to hear it later when you when you you want me at the table and so cuz that is my room um so yes I do always say stop and pause when that person makes a call but we know how folks are I voted for you we so we we go to church together we either shop at the grocery store together we work together whatever and I go to you so I'm going to tell you my issue and sometimes it's hard to put that to to wait for the calls but as soon as you can let them know hey you don't want me to hear this right now because I can't do anything about it I'm individual board member I cannot act or anything as individual board member all of our actions take like edible as as a board at a duty call me so yes great Point um but this boring bus actually to to go and ride on the boat to to make a recommendation to the principal again going back to what we talked about earlier um no directives to staff and no um and no personal action so the first with the superintendent and I'm staying from Individual Council on action the Border Miss members will deal with administrative Services through the superintendent said that already and your policy bbaa I actually included this bbaa as a rule what a board member receives complaints or requests from staff students parents legal Guardians are members of the public he or she must remain in partial as such management later come before the board in this particular capacity otherwise the board member I mean it goes on but this is specifically addressed in your administrative Group which is good stuff so um yeah A+ plus 41 um actually addressing that email it really doesn't matter what situation resolution is that someone who works as a board member you do not part correct so again always try to direct that person to their supervisor or the superintendent and then there's nothing wrong with you saying hey this complaint came to me I'm passing it on to you but as an individual Foreman there is nothing you can do but and so is it fair for you to have all this additional information when you get if this matter comes before the phone and that's the problem that run into if you were going to the court of law would you have because you want the judge to already know everything about the other side and what that side is going to be that that that's basically where you are you are supposed to be an impartial panic judge for the whatever situation right this is see she must be made in partial as such marriage judicial capacity yes okay that what term remain in partial does that mean that I mean I know in parts of me that I can't take side with you know that but um so that comes back to was telling that person you know they need to stop because what tends to happen is you're getting theirs out of the story and immediately saying to me I'm going to take care of whatever it is that you feel even wrong all right so you're basically telling that person I agree with you I'm going to tell you right by engaging in saying you're going to do this so yes or you know when a board member then um calls the principal or the superintendent and it says so and so told me that you need to fix it you already saying yes I agree with everything that person I already said because there are always 2 sides of story people going to tell you the good side of their story and then when the facts really come to you you realize oh a b c and d also happen before we got to that 1 so community board members have relatives in the system grandchildren children um relatives who are employed to what if board member finds out something from how do they deal with that in terms of the forwarding that on all of a sudden you've got different relationship with the person giving you some information so oh it will be the same thing you would they're going to tell you especially if it's your child your child is going to say Dad guess what happened to me today and of course usually take so you would still say the same thing I'm referring you you need to take this to your immediate supervisor or the superintendent and then when you if you call and you can call superintendent and say hey this came to me I know I'm going to have to recuse myself I'm just passing on the information because it is your job so but that happened right you like because I do have a daughter that teach in the system and she does too and you know that I try to tell her um 2 sided on that I don't want to tell that I want to know you know I mean really I want to what is your child oh yeah you are but you automatically know that if something affecting that is directly related to your child when it comes for the board you couldn't you would have to reduce yourself anything so because of the relationship so yes this your child you are going to want to hear your bad about that no doubt about it it might be a best friend you you know your friend is going to tell you something but you know because of that and you will have to accuse yourself and again it's still the directive to you need to take that back to your supervisor with the um superintendent because remember you still not supposed to pick up the phone and say my child told me that you need to do just just remember those cautionary tales that's all but yeah great question um anything else about engagement before we move on to communication if y'all have any other questions but I mean all right I think I have a couple of examples and Communications so I try to take different um areas in this board member me Caroline feels like plenty of comments always directed at her and that cleansing things his number of Border rewards give him get him the right to talk down to board member Caroline discusses her concerns with the board of chairs we think they need to come together on 1 Accord of course the board chair says they will discuss this at the next board meeting during executive session is that appropriate however but I understand the chair wanting to say so that might mean to be some other form of fashion to me in that particular board member that you you know want to talk to or have this issue with let's go ahead down have coffee let's talk with the with the chair coffee with the chair and say hey bless the contract about something you know so how do we all especially if it again not not for y'all oh no it's 9 and 5 again but you know you don't ever want somebody that the person but again if just 1 person those are conversations that you need to have you all have to work together for the 2 4 4 2 or as 40 4 years and somebody may come and go in between but so if say Hey listen now and have coffee Dwayne I have to take Dwayne and have coffee all the time and they do it it is all the way right but yeah let's let's talk about something and and let's try to work these things out because you don't want things like this to rare as ugly head because what happens when you don't say that just like normal you bottle it up you bottle it up follow up and then if something happens at the board member that that board at the board meeting that triggers and you go way off and then it's because I didn't address when it first started bothering me so sit down with that person and look have a cup of coffee and say we going to have to work together how do we get past this cuz it may be something then you're seeing and that person doesn't realize that that's the impression that they're giving and so you know impression it's a it's in the the the the air is my impression of what you're doing not necessarily that you're doing it works so if I say hey you know I just want to make sure that we're okay because I get the impression you know this is what I feel like after every board meeting you know I hope so yes since I don't have coffee talk those things out um work on and then the policy BC says you should work harmoniously with other borders without trying to get this dominant divorce or neglect much rather work um any questions about Communications with each other the teachers and her neighborhood Elementary School that the principal is not allowing them the 30 minutes unencumbered break every day as required by law board member 1 woman tells the teacher she will take care of that teachers she will take care of their concerns as a board meeting board member 1 woman informs superintendent that aware of the violation of Law and what is he going to do about it what are the issues other than the other than the talking to the teachers cuz we we talked about that part of it but what is a better way to handle this why do we surprised surprised at the board meeting right cuz we got to it is a gotcha why this this is not that's not way to the board meeting to have these conversations because he might not be aware or he or she might not be aware that any of that is happening so given the opportunity to look into it before we surprised surprised at the border and and we and we think about it in the in in our own personal lives I believe in you if our boss came to us instead of saying oh you know you may just mistaken this report let's wait till we call call all the staff together and say hey Timmy you know you made this mistake on this report that relationship is automatically going to go downhill because you could assume that you called me out for that so it's it's that type of thing we we want to treat each other the same way that you you would want to make sure that good uh board policy bvv the relationship that exists between the board and the superintendent is an intrinsic part of the education process within the community knowledge of what each can recently expect from the other can potentially help to promote sound working you always in the ethical honest way for open and above 4 manner with the superintendent and the community that the board should any questions there before we move on all right the truth of the matter we are Jasper advocacy group is not happy with the plan to consolidate the middle schools they begin a public Facebook group you know constantly posting information about The District board may receive the post and begin providing a factual begin providing factual information about the decisions that were made in an attempt to clear up any misunderstanding what are the issues will you ever win no these Facebook Facebook groups are not for the truth of the matter all the time okay so it is a lot of time I'm just to make people unhappy with what it is and so right um and then what is the other issue no not that you can't read them cuz you know what I tap a response of this could be let's add this to the next version and provide factual information so it's not that you don't necessarily want to know what the word on street is but if 5 of you start responding you you trigger foyer and the possibility of a me cuz you're discussing more business as you all go back and forth trying to clear up information in this in this space so that's the other um legal implication but some Let It okay just don't even worry about it I have to do that sometimes like you know these social these social media websites and I'm like and I thought why why do you feel the need to respond just let it go the question of the day what happens when they bring that to the meeting and how the no the board members bring it to the meeting on the agenda no it's not on the agenda the board member just bring it to the meeting and they include it in executive session or in the meeting what what being done I said underneath in the media social media that's great except isn't on the agenda so you that's another surprise so you're going to want to to have that conversation with the chair so it could be added to the agenda the chair is the 1 that's bringing it to them so Okay so it's a way to dress it and so we can put it on the agenda and address it to say hey we need to clear any misunderstandings with the codes may have about the decision that we make um it's another way to another thing that could be done to have a conversation with superintendent and have him send it out or Vortex send out something just so you aware this is happening on social media websites just want to forward to know don't start responding reply all is never your first just you know you want to have and then if you want to have a conversation with a chair you have a conversation with a chair but it is a way to let the full board know either through the chair or superintendent that these conversations are had are um on these social media website and you know just so the board is not surprising but that is something that could be cleared if you feel like that information does need to be responded to by the full board and just to clarify any miscommunication um again be mindful for you the convening of a core of the constituent membership of the public body to discuss the act upon with a public audience supervising control jurisdiction or advisory be mindful of that anytime you all start communicating together and the the last um scenario on the communication as the last board meeting board member Steve Jones exchanged several email messages with community members who are his close friends he uses personal cell and email account to discuss calling major in public comment period by concerned citizens regarding favoritism shown for a certain community members when they request a new school facilities for Church events concerning citizen learned of the emails and submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the district of board member jobs emails sent the last morning all the emails saying on the board meeting subject to 4 absolutely does it matter that it was the personal device um a nice little so you turn over there personally but we don't do anything any means I was a board member you listen to discuss or act upon District business is subject to court now you have a nice little lawyers will try to say oh no we you know they weren't doing it but just be mindful once those emails get out everybody's going to know what you think so that's its refrain from doing that any questions regarding communicate all right oh your policy b e d l talks about this specific board member who refrain from electronic communication no board members will not communicate electronically during meetings with members of the public other board members of District staff provide official board business agenda items or other board members are properly discussed publicly doing board meetings as does Communications are subject to public disclosure and Report um board members receiving electronic communication from the public doing meaning presented special concerns such communication promote the appearance of partiality there's an established opportunity for public participation so allowing the public to come and join the meeting outside of that designated public comment time includes other members of the public from the discussion if a woman's Warframe from Reading and Responding to electronic communication is important all right goals superintendent make it happen has proposed building a case Center which will provide students access to the fourth is an engineering Health Sciences mechanics cosmetology business Etc above and beyond with the district is currently offering what should the board consider cuz it sounds great right it's not finances also where does it spend your strategic plan why because you know again nobody was no because it sounds great but well where are we in oian planet we are supposed to be focusing on and you know can we add this further down the line as we review our opportunity to plan and say this is something we want to move in a Direction but when we switch gears from where we are to something like that out of the Blues it it just causes havoc on where we are financially and where and where we were moving um and then the second example superintendent proposes the following goals to the board for the 2025 2026 school year 1 he wants to complete Virginia Plan is due to the state 2 put a fence around the high school and 3 establishments program what are the issues now I I I use Dwayne to to the but this is actually this is the call man to me that said these are the Strategic goals that I proposed and I said as you should what are are these really go you have to do like a that's part of your job the law requires you to do this that's not a goal that you have to do that put a fence around the high school I mean hey miss that was a virtual robotics program that's a that's a um what was it that is a result of the goal so if you're if the goal was that increased um program programs for students then establishing a robotics program would be an example of that but that's not a goal because that is a again a result when the fence around High School is so so when we sit when we are working on these and so my my suggestion to the superintendent was you need to sit down with your board and they work session and look at your strategic plan is come up with some realistic go that's the other part of this is we want realistic goals it can be improved student um achievement 100% nobody's doing that so the goal is to improve the achievement and how what's the increments that we want get um per year 35 years whatever it is but that is a realistic goal that you say okay to uh superintendent you know we want you to reach this goal by you know um but we're going for our resources and funding and opportunities and what are you going to do to push this new that is that is how you set this because remember you're evaluating him based off of based off of the goal right and so they need to be realistic goals that the superintendent can can 1 um prove evidence of and actually work for me yes measure measurable goals not savings right and not in that state so it should be measurable goals that um well what do you mean when you say statement completely oh oh yeah yeah yeah yeah right well the law says that when is your turn is this so that's what it was it was that's it was the year that superintendent to do the the Strategic plan that's why it's that I'm confused as to why this is not a goal it's not an option we have to do that um so yes it needs to be um realistic measurable again spoken and your board passes Aida d a b a a c b I basically um talk about this addresses in some way but you know again looking at the specifically where the board goes for the districts go and then Superman if you guys based and using those for the superintendent evaluation right so your policy I think it's b a a specifically talks about you know the board sitting down at a retreat like and establishing the board goals and it should be based off I think it's it's a ba or ba but I think it's baa um and establishing goals so then because what does the board want to focus on strategic plan the board says yes we see the Strategic plan for the district our Focus will be over the next year about 2 year is is supposed to be dynamic so every um over the next year or whatever it is that you can constantly just like the Strategic plan you can constantly um re-evaluate it but what do we want to focus on this year um because you know that will drive your budget that will drive and that is how where you moving the district is how you evaluate the super data the superintendent have to have a vision to follow and so it's a i i my goals will be focusing on this because the Lord has established it as the district's Focus does that make sense okay I have to explain that to you um I know no no I think that was it you can tell that they were easy wins right that's what it was it was easy win um and that's not the that's should not be a bowling season it should be something that we all are working toward and and and um and it's not easy work right we're moving these needles this that's not easy work um wait wait who's in the ground we have to work put in some s*** unless and and and move the district to the next level because education every student in the district every race stand so I just have to stay out of the planning process and then that's like complain participate in creating those for the superintendent principles to follow because because none of our money we spend at a district should be spent anywhere other than what's being pretty much I will say you know this is never and not who you were because the thing happened um and and you always have to to be mindful of some something happened at the elementary school we have to address that we did not force it um but yes your strategic plan is your Holy Grail for the district that's why you're constantly looking at it constantly reviewing it to say where do we need to what changes do we need to make but overall this is our romance this is where we're going and so if it's all curriculum in this point because we move in students they probably never going to be offering but that's everybody's Focus if it's technology you know incorporating technology into the curriculum then that's everybody's Focus if it um I don't know where else would you you get my point and where what you what you do with the Strategic plan is setting the road map for the entire District and so yeah there's a reason why it's it's border pollution and submitted to the state because that is basically what you tell them to stay too this is this is not 5 year money meeting when we talked about earlier the board of wants and committee a 3 was to look at policy manuals and terminal where the policy should be updated the committee met on March 4th 2025 at noon in the district office for lunch and that was the time all committee members committee does this committee meeting need to be noticed absolutely and your policy bde specifically addressing that and saying all committees appointed by the board must follow the same um requirements as proposal good afternoon news reporting a story that the board had an illegal meaning at the Tailgater bar and ring a picture was taken a 6 board members gathered at the restaurant on Saturday afternoon was this on here it's a very loyally like answer which is the truth it depends what what was District business now you going to say no all day long but what is the impression people and so I I always say you know it's never a bad idea for board members to have opportunities outside of the board meeting to get to know each other so I would have to pick up now but what do you do when you do that you invite your family members and everybody there so you know we don't really do that all our family was there there was no me um and so if those when you when you do those type of things it's always great to say no you can you can tell us what the meeting but um I think um anytime you just have 6 more 5 Morgan please and at a an event gathered together without any other people but impression is always going to be that it was a um so is that my way again boy specifically said ah no chance meeting social media electronic communication and maybe use the circumstance the spirit of requirement for this chapter to act upon the matter with the public party supervision control jurisdictional advisory power so um this this I get this question all the time so if I like you on the phone with 2 4 minutes and I call 2 others individual to to to get the impression on this specific topic is that I'm okay right are you trying to circumvent the spirit of foyer to do what you did the best thing to know you're not on it but that is exactly what happened um Pauly your policy BC says refused to participate in a regular season with a lot of fishing with all members of the public do not have the opportunity to any questions there all right as far as regular session board member Craig Melvin received the board packet containing the privileged documents the director session was centered on the investigation of a teacher wanting to share this information with the district employee who is is good for him Mr Melvin forwards the email however he mistakenly sent the message what happened to that privileged information confidential information it is now public either what he sent it to his district employee friend it was public it would have been because there is a problem it's not a requirement so once you break that privilege out those are privileges and I know I said emails incorrectly all time oops my bad and that wasn't me and so luckily it has not never been a situation where you know it was privilege talking um communication but it happened so be careful again do not for this company uh information to say anyone once you receive it because I know we're electronic these days right are y'all receiving your your packets electronically so that it is a digital IP um so be careful when you receive that information to not share because you know what again once it's it's done and whoever you send it to I get has no obligation you can say hey but if I received it oh y'all guess what I know and they going to fire so and so oh what was happening and investigation of a teacher yes they going to fire so and so and so was going up once that word gets around the streets and that's how the district right now is going to do it it's not even about anything violence over dinner share the recent information the board discussed about principal hamburger with his wife he said it did not look good for the principal and the board will probably have to accept the superintendent's recommendation for termination the next day for of a ram McDonald's 8 year old daughter went to school and repeated everything she turned her last name about principal hamburger when the nice principal lady came to visit her family what other legal implications again uh Mr Donald Mr MacDonald conversation right the baby talk the baby talking that's the mouth baby the baby right so and I know I know we love our our family members but don't don't share it with them either because it is privileged information it is for your ears opening or no knowledge because you are making a tough decision uh meeting was maybe closed uh on the 4th privilege may be closed um policy BCS that maintain the confidentiality of all matters discussed in and information provided for exactly and then careful consideration these are things that I just want to add um I think um okay correct it says the board has voted to give all the all the buildings and the district a cosmetic mango the administration presented plan was named the ponds painting company as a painter for the Improvement the company the only pain in town has always given a district a significant discount because of the support of public education the owners of the Crayons painting company is a Muslim of newly elected board member Crayola crayon what should board member pray oh mother accused herself from the vote now can she participate in a discussion no because if I'm participating in discussion about whether my my baby should get this this contract my every every um word out of my mouth is going to be a positive and I'm going to try to sway that um the ethics commission does not require you to leave the room but I would suggest that you actually leave the room when that is concerned just to make sure you know nobody's giving body language there you know um and then ethical rule says no public official public member are are Public Employee they may participate in making or anybody attempt to use this office membership or employment to influence a governmental decision which he and family member and individual with who he is associated or a business with which he is associated has economic engines they will get to them so that anybody can make a a complaint to that this commission they will look into it um and family members defines a spouse parent everybody so um your policy BCB says the member must prepare a real estate agent because this is part of the the effort I learned in the conflict give it to the chairman of the board the board member must also be excused from deliberating on holding on the matter and it doesn't mean he should reflect if the disqualification and reasons for the disqualification is refusal is not if the matter is the boy will be voting on a group The Board member May recuse himself from the individual he or she is related to and vote on a remainder of the group The determining factor for this any questions today go ahead but if you remember from that sit in public I know I should not be focusing on this but I'm going to vote in then you see whoa that sounds so expensive I'm not sure it sounds like that's going to be an ethical 1 and then that person all right so your your child is a teacher and then y'all everybody's gonna get the that there's no child no say your child company then we share um board member Rocky babo was once a guidance member and the Apollo Creed School District he accepted a position in the neighboring District when he was not selected as a as a director of counseling I'm sorry now that boy no Rocky bell bell is on the post screen School District board he is determined to question every decision of the superintendent and he is disrespectful to the director of counseling this happens because you know I'm I'm out of the district I'm going to run but then when I get on the board what do we have to do I have to throw all out of all of all of the the the the reasons why out of the way and being active form because that at some point it was a superintendent or the director of counseling is going what father and so we don't want that let it go because the director of counseling it's not at all forget the job right I know I know we should have gotten and I and our minds we should have gotten but once once we get on the board what do we do we are acting the best interest of students Within is and so let Let It Go Let It Go both and active partially for the better the policy any questions anything anything I did not cover I tried to run the gaming of everything just to say you know in our role and response and as a board member our role and responsibility is just that to active parsley for the good of all students um to to have good relationships with 1 another and the superintendent again we got on everything that's just not realistic your individuals who um you know have have if individual way of thinking and so yes I can absolutely go no yes I can absolutely vote Yes but we want to do it in the best way possible in the best interest are um single member district oh so yes I know how that go and remember all those we were voting on by our single member district oh I didn't I didn't have to look down on the flight so we don't talk about remember you are still voting for the entire District so yes you have to take any consent oration those the 2 represent in your District but your vote ultimately is for all students in the district so you you know again you bring that perspective and say Hey you know I just want to make sure that when we are um looking at um football fields new football fields are the needs of the facility needs of the district that you remember you know to to to make sure that my my district is you know added a list or or being looked after but when you go voting on these facilities plan we are we are addressing all the needs of the district so any questions there I I know when I get it off of 1 and 1 call regarding this say I you can hear that clearly good morning
