The Jasper County School District has approximately 3,100 students on two campuses with a staff of more than 200 teachers. Forty-six percent of teachers have advanced degrees, and four teachers have achieved National Board Certification. All schools are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The student population is 70 percent African American, 19 percent Hispanic, and 11 percent white. The annual budget is approximately $26 million.
The district continues to improve in all areas with regard to the State Accountability Act and No Child Left Behind. Schools have been honored with Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards for academic progress on the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT).
The district continues to upgrade the technology plan. Technology coaches assigned to each school work with mathematics instructors to reinforce the value of technology as it relates to student achievement. A major focus is providing accelerated classes with intense instruction for students who are not showing adequate progress. The implementation of the MAPS testing program has provided staff with data to address student deficiencies.
Voters passed a $46 million school referendum in September 2001 to fund construction of two new schools, one in Ridgeland and one in Hardeeville. Both schools will house students in Pre-K through 12th grade. The schools will open in Fall 2007.
