The Jasper County School District has approximately 3,300 students on two campuses with a staff of more than 200 teachers. Fifty-three percent of teachers have advanced degrees. All schools are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The student population is 67 percent African American, 20 percent Hispanic, and 13 percent white. The annual budget is approximately $27 million.
The district continues to upgrade the technology plan. Technology coaches assigned to each school work with mathematics instructors to reinforce the value of technology as it relates to student achievement. A major focus is providing accelerated classes with intense instruction for students who are not showing adequate progress. The implementation of the MAPS testing program has provided staff with data to address student deficiencies.
Voters passed a $46 million school referendum in September 2001 to fund construction of two new schools, one in Ridgeland and one in Hardeeville. Both schools house students in Pre-K for 4-year-olds through 12th grade and opened in the fall of 2007.
