Office of Curriculum and Instruction
The Office of Curriculum and Instruction (OCI) is responsible for providing leadership and guidance in the implementation of curricular, instructional, and assessment support services for all levels, pre-kindergarten through12. The office oversees the whole spectrum of curricular and professional development initiatives at the district level. The OCI works closely with the building-level instructional leaders to ensure a shared mission, a common language, and to promote a collaborative professional development partnership.
Curriculum and Instruction At-A-Glance
1. South Carolina Standards (K-12)
Content area standards are part of the Education Accountability Act of 1998.
State Standards are the foundation for all instructional programs.
2. Curriculum and Pacing
Taskforces updated curriculum guides for the content areas.
Standards to be taught are divided by nine week periods.
3. Benchmark -Pretest
Tests are developed that align with the standards to be taught during the quarter.
The pretest gives teachers information on what students already know and key instructional focus areas.
MAP, DRA and DOMINIE assessments are administered at the beginning of the school year.
4. High Quality Instruction with Intervention and Acceleration
Teachers implement the instructional program at the appropriate level of rigor.
Instruction is differentiated to meet students' needs.
5. Benchmark - Posttest
At the end of each quarter, students are tested on the standards that were taught.
A comparison of pre- and post- results is conducted to gauge progress and needs.
MAP, DRA and DOMINIE assessments are administered at the end of the school year.
6. Intervention and Acceleration
Benchmark results are used to develop an intervention/acceleration plan for students based on specific standards.
Intervention/Acceleration strategies: After-school assistance, double dosing using computer lab, tutoring, differentiating instruction.
